Orphaned at a young age, Kai's younger years were spent planetside, in the slums of a city called Theris, on an outer rim planetoid in the Daedelus system.

Theris was no place for a child. The atmosphere was heavy, temperatures often below freezing. But he and others like him persisted in spite of their conditions. They carved out a place for themselves, however small, to exist.

On his 11th birthday, his world was irrevocably changed, by pure chance. On Theris, it was a tradition that every 10 years, one of the proletariat would be granted full UEE citizenship on their birthday, and given a small ship. The ceremony - called "the Raising" - was supposed to symbolise that any member of society could one-day hope to visit the stars.

But truly, it was an opiate for the masses. A token, designed to placate, not empower. And he hated them for it.

He wanted only one thing now. The ability, to change the way things are.

He wanted Influence. And so, he ventured out, into the great black.
