The original Three
In the Stanton system, aboard their trusty Argo Mole, three miners—NerdSteve, LiveFwee, and Treasend—made their living extracting resources from asteroid fields and planetary surfaces. The Argo Mole, a multi-crew mining ship, was their pride and joy, though it was far from pristine. NerdSteve, the pilot, guided the bulky vessel with skill and precision, maneuvering it through treacherous asteroid belts and debris fields. LiveFwee handled the scanning systems, his sharp instincts pinpointing valuable deposits with uncanny accuracy. Treasend, the bold driller, operated the mining lasers, his enthusiasm driving him to pursue every resource node with vigor.
The trio shared a love for mining, but their lives remained modest. The Mole, though dependable, bore the scars of countless ventures, patched and repaired with whatever parts LiveFwee could scrounge up. Their quarters at Grim Hex were sparse, with every credit invested back into fuel, maintenance, and equipment. Yet, they were undeterred—the thrill of discovery and their camaraderie made every expedition worthwhile.
One day, as they explored the asteroid belts near Hurston, LiveFwee detected an unusual signal. The scanner showed readings of a rare material buried deep within a dense asteroid cluster. NerdSteve deftly piloted the Mole toward the source, weaving through the chaotic field with practiced ease.
When they arrived, they were met with a breathtaking sight: a massive asteroid with luminous crystalline caverns, their surfaces glowing faintly in shades of blue and green. The crystals pulsed softly, casting an ethereal light that reflected off the Mole’s hull.
“This could set us up for life,” Treasend said, his voice filled with wonder as he peered through the ship’s observation ports.
NerdSteve’s voice was steady but thoughtful. “This isn’t just about credits. This is something rare—something the verse deserves to see and understand.”
LiveFwee nodded, his hand resting on the scanner’s controls. “We should share this. Let the verse marvel at it like we are now.”
Instead of mining the cavern, the trio documented their discovery, reporting it to a research consortium on MicroTech. Scientists flocked to study the crystalline asteroid, uncovering its unique properties and preserving its beauty. As a reward, the consortium provided just enough credits to upgrade the Argo Mole, ensuring the miners could continue their journeys.
Though they remained humble miners, NerdSteve, LiveFwee, and Treasend had discovered their true treasure: the joy of uncovering the universe’s wonders and sharing them with others. As the Argo Mole drifted among the stars, its crew felt a renewed purpose driving them forward—exploration, discovery, and the thrill of the unknown.
