Cullard Heavy Industries (CHI) was founded by Jack Cullard in 2949 to help miners prepare for Star Citizen’s evolving, dynamic economy. A backer since 2947, Cullard has followed Star Citizen’s development since its original Kickstarter announcement and has contributed several hundred dollars each year, building a small but capable mining fleet. Though CHI is a young and relatively small organization, Cullard brings real-world business experience and the drive to grow CHI into a top-tier industrial group. His long-term plan includes leveraging his home production studio to develop a professional website and a YouTube channel featuring informative, high-quality, no-nonsense content.
Although mining in Star Citizen is still taking shape, Cullard anticipates several key trends based on CIG design notes and planned economic features. Unlike many MMOs where resources respawn, Star Citizen’s resources are intended to be finite. And unlike games where players can “start over” by moving to a different server, CIG’s goal is a single Persistent Universe (PU) enabled by server meshing. At launch, the PU is expected to include five systems, with additional systems added over time. These design choices will likely drive early waves of exploration as players scour uncharted territory and rush to secure valuable deposits through land claims. As high-yield sites become scarce, miners may need to rework the “crumbs” left behind by prior operations or push farther into fringe space to locate resource-rich pockets.
Cullard also expects mining to become increasingly dependent on multiple supporting professions. Miners will need exploration skills to find viable deposits, refining capability to reduce inert material and improve yield, and trading expertise to sell refined goods effectively. Operating in hostile areas will require sound military doctrine and reliable force projection. In short, profitable mining will demand a multi-disciplinary approach to maximize productivity and margins—an approach that can overwhelm newcomers and create steep barriers to entry.
To stay ahead of these challenges, CHI aims to build capability before worst-case conditions emerge. Through CHI, members will: (1) train across multiple disciplines, (2) assemble self-sufficient expeditionary fleets for long-range mining operations, (3) operate CHI’s PMC assets for escort and security, (4) use land claims to secure high-value resources within UEE space, and (5) establish a network of outposts to extend CHI’s reach into deep space.
Where large, corporate-style organizations often burden members with fees and rigid rules, CHI is structured around cooperative joint ventures. Members maintain minimal financial obligations to the extent the game allows. They do not work for CHI; rather, CHI exists to serve the shared financial interests of its members. It does so by providing an educational, social, and organizational framework that lowers the barriers to profitable mining and supports multi-crew, group operations—while minimizing micromanagement whenever possible to preserve enjoyment, freedom, and a strong sense of camaraderie during gameplay.
