In the vast darkness of the ’verse, an ancient order endures. Descended from the Prophet Gaben’s inner circle, we guard truths hidden since Old Earth: the lambda, the crowbar, the coming Third.
Honor. Mastery. Secrets that bend reality itself.
The Ancient and Illustrious History of the Knights of Gabel Newell
In the shadowed annals of human endeavor, few orders command such reverence and mystery as the Knights of Gabel Newell, a brotherhood forged in the fires of ancient Terra’s digital age and enduring through the vast exodus to the stars. Known to the uninitiated as a mercantile corporation registered within the United Empire of Earth (UEE), the Knights are in truth a secret society of unparalleled antiquity—one that traces its sacred lineage across millennia, guarding esoteric truths revealed by the Prophet himself: Lord Gabel Newell, the Visionary of Valves, whom the faithful call simply Gaben.
Origins in the Pre-Diaspora Era (Late 20th to Early 22nd Century, Old Earth Reckoning)
The Order’s genesis lies shrouded in the mists of Terra’s Information Age, circa 1996–1998 CE, when Gabel Newell, a mortal of extraordinary insight, co-founded the sacred forge known as Valve. Through divine inspiration, he crafted simulacra—virtual realms of unparalleled fidelity—that mirrored the hidden architecture of the cosmos. His works, such as the Half-Life Chronicles and the Portal Enigmas, were not mere entertainments but prophetic codices.
In Half-Life, the resonance cascade foretold the chaotic anomalies of jump points and the alien incursions that would plague humanity. In Portal, the manipulation of apertures revealed the secrets of quantum traversal, presaging Nick Croshaw’s discovery of the first stable jump point in 2271. The faithful believe Gaben pierced the veil, glimpsing the United Empire of Earth, the Banu Protectorate, the Xi’an Empire, and the savage Vanduul hordes centuries before humanity’s first steps beyond Sol.
A cadre of devoted acolytes—programmers, artists, and visionaries—recognized these revelations and formed the nascent Order in secret enclaves of the ancient internet. They adopted knightly virtues: honor in combat, generosity in trade (echoing the legendary “Steam Offerings” of abundance), and unyielding patience amid endless trials. The crowbar became their sacred blade, symbolizing the breaking of barriers; the lambda (λ) their hidden sigil, marking caches of forbidden knowledge; and the Orange Box their reliquary of truths.
Like the ancient Templars of medieval Terra or the elusive Priory of old, the Knights operated in shadows, initiating worthy souls through layered rites. Outer circles knew only camaraderie and commerce; inner sanctums guarded the Great Prophecy: the coming of the Third Revelation, a final simulacrum that would unlock ultimate mastery over the ‘verse.
The Hidden Centuries: Survival Through Tribulation (22nd–26th Centuries)
As humanity surged into the stars—colonizing Proxima Centauri in 2232, discovering the Croshaw system in 2271, and encountering the Banu in 2438—the Order preserved its flame in secrecy. During the turbulent expansion, when corporations vied for dominance and the Tevarin Wars (2541–2603) tested human resolve, the Knights embedded themselves among explorers and merchants, subtly guiding discoveries that aligned with Gaben’s visions.
The rise of the Messer regime in 2528 forced the Order deeper underground. Under the Imperators’ iron rule (2528–2792), any hint of esoteric knowledge risked purge by the Advocacy or worse. The Knights scattered their chapters across nascent colonies, encoding teachings in data vaults and oral traditions passed among trusted kin. They viewed the Messers as false prophets, corruptions of Gaben’s pure vision, and quietly aided the overthrow in 2792, emerging stronger in the New United Era.
Through the Xi’an Cold War, the Vanduul raids, and the Fair Chance Act’s protections of developing worlds, the Knights endured. They interpreted the Vanduul as the “Combine Harbingers” foretold in ancient texts—relentless invaders from beyond known space—and vowed eternal vigilance against them.
Reemergence in the Modern ‘Verse (28th Century to Present, 2956 SEY)
With the stabilization of the UEE in the 29th century, the Knights formally incorporated as a civilian organization, ostensibly a consortium of traders, explorers, and privateers operating fleets of customized vessels (often bearing names like Crowbar’s Resolve, Aperture’s Grace, or Black Mesa Venture). Publicly, they engage in legitimate commerce—hauling rare artifacts, providing escort to pilgrims, and contributing to UEE defense initiatives.
In truth, the inner Order thrives as a knightly brotherhood, structured in hierarchical degrees akin to ancient mystery schools:
Initiate: The seeker, tested in trials of wit and endurance.
Squire: Apprentice knight, sworn to service and secrecy.
Knight Errant: Full brother, bearing the crowbar sigil and oath-bound to defend the weak.
Knight Commander: Leader of a chapter, guardian of regional lore.
Grand Master: The supreme guide, elected from among the most illuminated, residing in a hidden citadel (rumored in the uncharted fringes of Stanton or Nyx).
Rituals involve solemn gatherings in dim-lit holds, reciting the Litany of the Valve (“One… Two… Await the Three”), sharing “cakes” of sustenance (a nod to ancient deceptions in the Portal trials), and meditating on holographic recreations of Gaben’s worlds. Members wear concealed emblems: a stylized steam vent or lambda etched beneath armor plating.
Today, in 2956, the Knights of Gabel Newell number in the thousands across UEE space, with rumored outposts among the Banu and clandestine observers in Xi’an territory. They seek lost Terra relics—ancient servers holding fragments of the unreleased Third Revelation—believing its recovery will herald a new golden age, granting unparalleled navigation through jump points and defenses against existential threats.
To outsiders, they are honorable spacers, generous in deals and fierce in battle. To the initiated: eternal guardians of humanity’s deepest truths, knights in the eternal vigil.
May the Prophet’s gaze guide you, and the Third ever approach.

In the name of the Prophet Gaben, Visionary of Valves, Keeper of the Lambda, and Herald of the Third Revelation.
We, the Knights of Gabel Newell, stand eternal in the void between stars—guardians of truths older than the jump points themselves, forged in the sacred fires of Old Terra’s digital age and carried unbroken across the diaspora of humanity.
We declare:
That the ’verse is not chaos, but a grand simulacrum crafted by divine insight. The Prophet beheld its architecture long before Croshaw pierced the veil: resonance cascades in the Half-Life Chronicles foretold the perils of quantum traversal; the portals of aperture revealed the hidden paths we now sail; the relentless Combine warned of the Vanduul tide that crashes against our frontiers.
We await the Third Revelation—not as idle dreamers, but as sworn knights who prepare the way. When it comes, it shall grant mastery over the cosmos: flawless navigation, unbreakable defense, abundance without end.
We reject the fleeting empires of profit and power. The Messer regime was but a false prophecy, overthrown by those who heeded the true path. Corporations rise and fall like summer sales, but the Order endures.
We uphold the ancient virtues:
Honor in every engagement, whether blade or bargain.
Generosity in trade, for the Steam Offerings taught that true wealth is shared.
Patience amid endless delay, for the faithful know: one… two… the Third approaches.
Vigilance against the harbingers from beyond known space.
Secrecy in the inner mysteries, that the unworthy may not profane the lambda.
We are merchants to the galaxy, explorers of forgotten relics, defenders of the weak. Yet beneath the public mantle lies the sacred brotherhood—knights bound by crowbar and code, seeking lost servers of Terra that hold fragments of the final truth.
Let all who hear the call step forward. The ’verse is vast and dark, but the light of the Orange Box guides the worthy.
One. Two. Await the Three.
By the Lambda Eternal,
The Knights of Gabel Newell
