Our Founders

Named in homage to the legendary first cosmonaut, Gagarin GmbH is a family owned and operated interstellar logistics and surveying company. The company was founded in New Austin, Terra, on 3 March 2921 by retired UEE Navy officers Pedro Kuikanen and Barbara Meitner together with signals analyst Tomoko Kawakami.

During its early years the company earned most of its revenue taking surveying subcontracts from large resource extraction companies, drawing on the founders’ long-range survey experience with the UEE Navy. Through careful investment, and by leveraging her security clearance and engineering background, CEO Barbara Meitner led the growth of Gagarin GmbH into a successful specialist exploration company.

Second Generation

In 2937 the founders’ son, Captain Volker Kuikanen, retired from a 24-year UEE Navy career — spanning Squadron 42, long-range patrol command, and two years in command of the hospital ship Nightingale — and joined the firm as chief pilot.

Sofia Kuikanen, Pedro’s daughter, served in the UEEN as a Crusader Hercules pilot, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Sofia spent most of her eleven years as a commissioned officer in front line service, delivering supplies, vehicles, and personnel throughout UEE space, including combat-zone deployment of armoured vehicles and munitions as flight lead of a Hercules M2 element with the 2220th Transport Squadron, a special operations unit. In 2940 she was decorated for defending her element from an unexpected attack by a Vanduul raiding clan in the Vega system during her final combat mission. Kuikanen completed service as an advanced tactical instructor with the 622nd Training Squadron before retiring at 31. In 2943 she took over the reins of the family business replacing her father who had recently retired due to failing health.

Gagarin GmbH’s founder Pedro Kuikanen died in 2948.

Today

Now focused primarily on logistics and support services for remote outposts, since 2950 Gagarin GmbH has earned the majority of its revenue from the transport of high value cargo in medium and low security systems.

Today the company is led by Managing Director Sofia Kuikanen, with Volker Kuikanen serving as senior pilot and inspector. Gagarin GmbH also holds a 40% share of Vostok Corporation, a private military contractor founded in 2946.

Our Business

Gagarin GmbH is an exploration and transport business capable of operations in all major systems in the ‘Verse. The Kuikanen family has a long tradition of UEE Navy service, and the company hires flight crews exclusively from the pool of retired UEE Navy personnel.

Complementing the commercial focus on transport, Gagarin GmbH continues to provide a range of technical and scientific services in order to maintain the technical and emergency proficiency necessary for very long range navigation and operations near high security and combat regions of space. By hiring only qualified military pilots, and through its sister company Vostok Corporation — a private military contractor specialising in escort and VIP security, in which Gagarin GmbH holds a 40% share — the company is able to boast a less than 0.1% loss and damage rate on all routes.

If you’re interested in joining Gagarin GmbH, please file your CV with our personnel director. Due to the nature of our contracts, all potential crew members, pilots, scientific, and operations staff will be required to undergo UEE security clearance prior to employment. If you do not currently hold the required clearances, our security chief will assist you in completing this necessary process. For this reason, preferential employment terms are offered to employees who have held UEE Navy security clearances and to former Imperial civil servants.

Although Gagarin GmbH routinely handles all contracts in-house, from time to time affiliate subcontractors are employed when special capabilities or expertise are required, and to assist in providing logistics or security support for certain large scale projects.
