History

The Helghast is a group of Humans that were left behind on Branaugh II, a barely habitable terrestrial rocky planet, in 2878 shortly after the initial discovery of the system by Desmond Fell. The group came to the planet based on initial reports of the new system in hopes to be a part of a new terraformed world and in search for wealth and prosperity. They quickly realized that what they were looking for would not be found when the planet was deemed not worth the cost to terraform. Before the group could get back to the assortment of small ships that brought them there through the only jump point into the system they were abandoned. Due to negligence, by mistake, or on purpose the group now had to fight for their survival on their new hostile planet plagued by constant storms and high winds. The people would learn to adapt and survive in harsh environments through perseverance, ingenuity, and the use of the many cave systems on the planet. They adopted a culture of combat but not in the typical way. They became highly skilled in hiding with camouflage and thus leading to their tactics being based on long range, stealth, and small unit maneuvers under darkness or by surprise. They would have a upbringing of social fighting and militaristic training due to the planet always trying to kill them. They believed by culturing strong and tough individuals they would have a higher chance of surviving the hell of a planet they now call home. Adapted to such a harsh environment and rigorously trained make these people very deadly and skilled fighters. These people would regularly watch from afar the development of the closest thing on Branaugh II that could be called a town, Ne’er, that was developed over many years by the Tevarin people slowly migrating to the planet. The Tevarin named this local group of human survivors Helghast (plural). They named them based on the Human Dutch-Germanic word “gast”, meaning “guy” and combined this with “hell”, the description of the planet given to it by many travelers before. Therefore Helghast, standing for “hell guy”, normalized into “people from hell”, became their commonly known name and was adopted by the group themselves. What little contact the Tevarin and other people had with the Helghast has led to their reputation of being solitary people, not liking to be around large areas or settlements and very rarely going to Ne’er for supplies. However even with their solitude the Helghast became well known as highly skilled warriors both on foot, and surprisingly in the cockpit of a ship, once they were introduced to them after being abandoned. They mostly keep to themselves but have been known to be contracted due to their skills by all manner of people and organizations. Since their re-emergence to the larger galaxy it has been said that they instill fear wherever they go and reports have said that their very presence makes others feel dread, weariness, and sorrow.

Manifesto

The intentions of the Helghast people are that of preservation. Not only for themselves but for others as well. Even though they were left for dead many years ago they have adopted a society of honor and respect and tend to stand against those that mean ill on others. Their motives seem to be that of their social standards. They are driven by their instilled sense of honor, strength, respect, and drive to always become they best they can be at any task. Their views are not very well known. What little is known is that they view themselves as higher skilled warriors and pilots from other humans albeit not in a boastful way. They are surprisingly humble given what made them the way they are and is one of the reasons they are sought after for work and hold such a reputation.
