History

The Mad Radiant Ducks was forged from a fundamental reality of the verse: the galaxy belongs to independent pilots, but the deep black kills the truly isolated.

Three friends founded the organization to solve the ultimate dilemma faced by the independent operator. Most of the pilots who fly under the radiant banner are dedicated solo captains by nature—lone prospectors cracking deep-space quantanium, solitary salvage scrappers dissecting abandoned hulls, long-haul cargo runners, cutthroat combat contractors, and shadow-runners slipping beneath UEE radar.

They live for the freedom of answering to no master, choosing their own routes, and keeping their own profits. Yet every veteran captain knows that absolute isolation has a hard ceiling. When high-threat pirate blockades lock down a sector, massive capital wrecks require a multi-ship salvage grid, or heavily defended combat contracts demand overwhelming firepower, a lone ship is simply outgunned and outmatched.

To bridge the gap between complete autonomy and fleet-scale power, the founders drew upon two timeless survival strategies: the maritime charter of the Brethren of the Coast and the natural instincts of wild waterfowl.
In the wild, ducks forage across wetland territories in complete independence—some dabbling in quiet shallows, others diving deep into treacherous waters. They answer to no central leader in their daily grind. But when crossing hostile terrain, they aggregate into tight, aerodynamic flight lines. The point bird cuts the harsh wind resistance for the flock, rotating out dynamically with zero ego or permanent rank.

The flock mirrors this exact balance:

Sovereignty in Downtime: Between operations, every pilot is their own boss. There are no mandatory shifts, no bureaucratic oversight, and no tithes. You fly what you want, when you want, where you want.

Decisive Fleet Unity: The moment high-risk, high-reward contracts appear—where a solo pilot would be hard-pressed to survive—a rally beacon is lit. A temporary operational chain of command snaps into place. Officers step up to coordinate strike wings, defensive screens, and extraction logistics.

The Dissolving Ranks: The instant the target is crushed, the cargo secured, and the aUEC split down to the exact credit, the hierarchy immediately vanishes.

Transponders scatter across various systems, and the solo captains return to the stars—free, sovereign, and backed by an entire flock ready to burn bright at a moment’s notice.

Articles of Agreement for the Sovereign Captains of the Mad Radiant Ducks

PREAMBLE: THE VOID AND THE V-FORMATION

We, the independent captains of the Mad Radiant Ducks, recognize an unyielding truth of the verse: absolute freedom is the lifeblood of a true pilot, but the cold expanse of deep space destroys the solitary.
We reject the suffocating tyranny of corporate hierarchies, naval bureaucracy, and hollow rank structures. We are solo operators by nature—miners, scrappers, haulers, gun-runners, and combat mercenaries. Yet, we recognize that when the storm hits and the contract demands fleet-scale violence or heavy industrial coordination, the lone ship falters where the flock prevails.

Adapted from the ancient Chasse-Partie of the Brethren of the Coast and governed by the natural laws of flight, we bind ourselves to these Articles.

ARTICLE I: SOVEREIGNTY IN DOWNTIME

  • Your Ship, Your Rule: Outside of called operations, every Duck is their own master. There are no mandatory shifts, no home-port restrictions, and no tithes on private earnings.
  • The Open Verse: Whether a member works within the laws of the UEE or operates in the gray zones of unregulated space is their personal affair. The organization does not police the personal ledgers of its captains.
  • Dabblers and Divers: Every captain chooses their own discipline. No industrialist is forced into a dogfight, and no combat pilot is forced onto a salvage laser.

ARTICLE II: THE CALL TO FLIGHT

  • The Temporary Point: When a fleet operation or high-threat contract is declared, a flight lead is designated. For the duration of the engagement, command and control is absolute.
  • Rotating Lead: Leadership is a function of necessity, not a permanent title of nobility. The lead cuts the wind for the flock and rotates back into the line when the mission demands a different skill set.
  • Voluntary Assembly: No captain is penalized for remaining on their own solo run when an operation is called. But those who answer the beacon commit fully to the wing until the objective is secured.

ARTICLE III: THE COMPACT OF SPOILS

  • No Prey, No Pay: We take no corporate subsidies and offer no idle stipends. Rewards are earned in the field through sweat, salvage, and spent munitions.
  • Operational Overhead: Before the payout is divided, fleet operating expenses—including quantum fuel, shared ammunition, and critical repair costs for frontline damage—are deducted from the gross prize.
  • Equal Franchise: Payouts are distributed with strict fairness among all participating hulls. Command personnel draw minor tactical compensation, but every contributing gun, laser, and tractor beam receives an equitable share.

ARTICLE IV: DEFENSE OF THE POND

  • The Swarm Reflex: A strike against one Duck in contested space is a challenge to the entire flock. While we do not seek out petty wars, we respond to unprovoked aggression with overwhelming, radiant force.
  • The Oath of Honesty: No member shall hoard shared operational loot, conceal salvage yields, or abandon a wingman under fire. Breach of trust results in immediate and permanent expulsion.

ARTICLE V: THE DISPERSAL

  • Dissolution of Rank: The exact instant the contract is completed, the aUEC transferred, and the hulls repaired, the chain of command dissolves.
  • Return to the Black: Officers step down, transponders clear, and every captain charts their own jump point—free, sovereign, and backed by the flock.

Charter

ORGANIZATIONAL CHARTER: THE MAD RADIANT DUCKS
Operating Compact & Bylaws of the Flock

SECTION I: PURPOSE & FOUNDING DOCTRINE

The Mad Radiant Ducks (MRD) is established as an egalitarian fraternity of sovereign ship-captains, freelancers, industrial operators, and combat contractors.
The organization rejects centralized bureaucracy, mandatory time commitments, and permanent peacetime hierarchies. Its core objective is to afford solitary operators the complete freedom of solo flight during standard cycles, while providing an organized, high-efficacy battlefleet structure when scale, security, and superior firepower are required.

SECTION II: INDIVIDUAL SOVEREIGNTY (DOWNTIME CODE)

  • Captain’s Autonomy: Every member holds complete ownership and authority over their own vessel, crew, cargo, and personal finances. The organization levies zero operational tithes or taxes on solo earnings.
  • Voluntary Participation: Group operations are strictly opt-in. A captain may decline an operational rally without penalty, loss of standing, or administrative review.
  • Operational Spectrum: The organization maintains a neutral, pragmatic stance regarding galactic authorities. Members are free to pursue lawful commerce, high-sec hauling, deep-space salvage, or gray-market operations outside UEE oversight, provided their actions do not directly compromise the safety or assets of the flock.

SECTION III: THE COMPACT OF FLIGHT (OPERATIONAL PROTOCOL)

* Activation of the Point: When a rally beacon is called for fleet-scale activities (combat strikes, multi-ship salvage, escort lines, or heavy mining convoys), an operational command structure is temporarily established.
  • The Point Lead: A designated Flight Lead (Point) assumes tactical command for the duration of the sortie. Tactical orders issued by the Point or assigned Wing Leads are binding from the moment quantum drives spool until the op is formally stood down.
* Rotational Merit: Command is treated as an operational task rather than a permanent rank. Leadership roles rotate based on the specific requirements of the mission (combat, logistics, industrial scanning) and the expertise of the attending captains.

SECTION IV: THE CHASSE-PARTIE (FINANCIAL DIVISION & SPOILS)

  • No Prey, No Pay: MRD maintains no corporate treasury for idle payouts. Revenue is generated purely through active field operations.
  • Overhead Deductions: Gross proceeds from joint operations are first applied to direct fleet expenditures: * Expended ordnance, ballistic munitions, and countermeasures. * Quantum and hydrogen fuel expenditures during fleet transit. * Direct hull repair costs sustained in the line of operational duty.
  • Equitable Shares: The remaining net balance is divided equally among all participating hulls and crew seats according to pre-agreed operational shares. Minor tactical premiums may be allocated to command vessels managing heavy fleet logistics, but all participating lasers, tractor beams, and turrets receive full compensation.
  • The Transparency Oath: Any member caught withholding, diverting, or secretly skimming salvage materials, cargo manifests, or contract payouts from a shared operation faces immediate, permanent expulsion.

SECTION V: FLOCK DEFENSE & INTERNAL CONDUCT

  • The Swarm Reflex: Aggression against a member vessel in contested space constitutes an attack on the entire organization. Available assets are authorized to provide mutual defense and extraction support.
  • Non-Aggression: Unprovoked attacks, griefing, asset theft, or unauthorized telemetry leaks against fellow Ducks are strictly prohibited.
  • The Dispersal: The instant an operation concludes, profits are cleared, and repairs are completed, the tactical hierarchy instantly dissolves. Officers step down, transponders clear, and all members return to independent status.
