With Odyssey expansion FDev decided to introduce something new to the game and released a long awaited feature, space legs! But instead of properly integrating it into the most successful game loops like exploration and adding the most requested feature with ship interiors the`ve developed an entire FPS section of the game. And this almost killed it. There was a literal exodus of ED players to SC with multiple youtubers switching games. Now no one plays that FPS mode and people actively advice new players to avoid it. Years of dev time, most likely millions of dollars spent on a feature that no one wanted and no one plays. SC is now going the same route. People backed a SPACE game, pay absolutely stupid money to own SPACEships to have their personal adventure in space, maybe team up with friends for fun. But CIG are now building a whole endgame around base raiding and large org warfare, while planning to funnel the biggest demographic in solo pve players into fps instanced dungeons in Area 18 sewers. With this direction 1.0 would inevitably become an Odyssey update for SC, full of features no one asked for, players leaving for other projects, a bunch of gameplay loops that no one plays and millions spent not just for nothing but to lose customers. SC should play on it`s strength, people consistently want exploration and fleshed out pve game loops. -Add wormholes that can be scouted by exploration ships and lead to instanced encounters in space, from pve combat to rare loot, resources, derelicts etc.(their locations can be moved by datarunners and sold as physical items) -Add pirate asteroid bases that can be raided by groups or sneaked in by solos. -Add UEE outposts with the same gameplay but reversed . -Add faction warfare so that PVP can be structured and fair. But for the love of god rethink making SC into a Rust or DayZ clone, it won`t end well. As a game designer I know that some ideas are really cool in your head, you are really invested in them but they rarely survive their first real implementation, and on the scale of SC this can be catastrophic. That`s exactly what i think happened with ED Odyssey and absolutely can happen with SC. P.S. ED had the best year since forever because they went back to what made that game great, and with colonization they actually try to integrate new features into existing popular game loops. This is the way.
