Not sure about you, but I get pretty excited when summertime comes around, and it’s finally time for me and my family to take a vacation. We’ve been discussing it for months and all the excitement of planning where we’ll go, what we’ll do while we are there keeps us going. We can’t wait! And, this isn’t even taking a plane ride.. … it’s just a 4 hour drive to a campground on a lake in the mountains, close to an an amusement park. It’s a tradition that our family has established. We do it every year if we can. But wait… if it’s so special, and so fun, why don’t we just do it more often? Well, there are many reasons, but most of them surround the reality of day to day life that makes it impractical. It’s just too time consuming to sneak a trip in anymore often. But you know what? The side effect of that is it makes the trip feel special. The anticipation of waiting for it to come around… the excitement of arrival… and heck, even the adventure on the trip itself! — I want to experience that in Star Citizen. I want to be able to feel like there are actual places I like to visit… that I just can’t do on a whim. Because if I am able to go there every day any time I want, it loses any feeling of being anything special at all. To me, this is the most important balancing act CIG has to get right: long distance travel. While I understand it’s a game, it would be sad if all of the space they’ve taken great pains to create was squandered. If players could get from the far end of any one star system to the furthest end of any other system in just an hour or two, then the world disappears. The meaning of travel is non-existent. It just because an annoying waiting period, rather than a meaningful choice. That’s why I feel like this balance has to account for the idea that it can take many days… (multiple gaming sessions) to truly get somewhere distant. How many days? Who knows… maybe even weeks. But the idea is that you have to commit to it, so it makes it worth it, or feels special when you are there - and aren’t necessarily quick to leave either, since you can’t just “hearth” back home. Getting this balance correct can make all the difference in the world between making this game feel like a place… or feel like just another video game. What are your thoughts? Do you feel like this is important to maintain the experience of living in a space-faring society? Or are you interested more in the game aspects, trying to win as fast and as much as possible?
