I’ve been following Star Citizen for years, and one of the things that originally drew me in was its strong grim dark sci-fi aesthetic. The early concept art felt grounded, industrial, heavy, worn metal, functional designs, believable military and civilian gear. It had weight. It felt lived-in. Lately, I feel like that identity is slowly fading. We’re seeing more and more brightly colored armors, glowing hearts, exaggerated shapes, flame patterns and cosmetic elements that feel closer to COD or Fortnite than to the gritty universe that originally defined Star Citizen. While customization is great and player expression matters, there’s a risk of diluting the visual coherence of the universe. The early artworks were kind of dark, industrial, sometimes dirty — and that’s what made them immersive. The universe felt serious, structured, almost oppressive in tone. Now some cosmetics feel disconnected from that atmosphere. This isn’t about rejecting creativity or fun skins. It’s about preserving the core identity of the game. Star Citizen stood out because it wasn’t cartoonish. It wasn’t flashy for the sake of being flashy. It had a believable sci-fi tone. I hope CIG continues to prioritize grounded, industrial, lore-consistent designs and keeps the visual direction aligned with the original grim dark vision that made many of us fall in love with the project. Let's share some old art:
