I generally like PvP. I played sports most of my life, played games just as much. And I even can enjoy watching sports (for the life of me I cannot understand enjoying watching other people play videogames though). But I enjoy ranked matches. I enjoy at least some challenge and enjoy having at least some chance. Lopsided sports games are no fun to watch imo. And to me, a lot of open world PvP seems like running around on the street with a chess board looking for kids and asking them "have you ever played chess before? No? GREAT! Let's play!" A lot of it seem like environments where either someone's specifically seeking out the greatest possible advantage, the most possible unfairness, the greatest differential in skill, or big egos wanting to beat the odds and rub that unlikely underdog gotcha in trollish fashion to those in power. It doesn't seem like an environment that isolates equal odds continually meeting in heart pounding tests of skill. Cause to me, if that were the goal, then it'd try to "rank" or match or achieve some kind of consentuality. Some type of fairness system of at least "you should have expected that" and not an absolute free-for-all cluster cluck where everyone is expecting a different experience. I'm not suggesting SC is or will be anything here. I'm just trying to understand if I'm just missing something in the appeal, or it really does require a certain mindset. What is the appeal of unfair odds and having no challenge against an opponent? Or is it not, and these games just often fail at avoiding such, to players' detriments?
