We're going to make a really ugly 'verse. So, yesterday I logged on and took a bunker mission. When I arrived a Cutlass was parked outside, I could hear weapons fire and the elevator was at the bottom. Another player was inside already, apparently doing my mission because my mission targets kept dying. Cutlass's enemy indicator was blue, whoever was in there had no crimestat. I took a minute to get back in my ship and get it landed right--I'd landed on some crates--and went back to the door. The elevator was now at the top, and there stood the other player, facing away from me. I now have a choice to make. I don't know this guy. I have the drop on him. I could motor him easily. That would be safer for me! There's every chance he's going to blow my head off the second he turns around. I don't know that, though. Dude could just be there minding his own business. I decide to leave my SMG slung. Closest I can get to 'hands up' that I'm aware of. I figure he'll definitely start shooting if he comes outside and sees a gun pointed at him. He gets off the elevator, takes a second to look at me, then... Yep, sure enough, after evaluating me as 'not a threat' he proceeds to gun me down, double-tap me dead, and blow up my ship just for good measure. The safe approach for me, would have been to kill this guy. Just... straight out murder him, on the off-chance there is a dick behind the other keyboard. This is a problem. We're building a universe here in which the safe approach is just to blow away anyone we meet that we don't know. EDIT 1: Since this got a lot of responses, I'd like to reply to a few things en masse. Yes, I'm aware there's a whole body of things I could have done differently, that wasn't really the point. The point is the type of community we're building that necessitates those different things I should have done. Some of your suggestions are outright telling. For instance, down here I've seen more than a few times, the advice that I should have gunned the guy down, disarmed him, THEN had a conversation with him and if he's chill, revive him. Do you really not see how screwed up that is? Most other variations on my handling involve running or hiding in some form. This is my point. This 'verse we're making is one in which, if we are law-abiding, we have no choice but to treat fellow Citizens as though they are pirates in potentia. We can either hide from them, run from them, or shoot them. The one thing we can never safely do is SAY HELLO.
