You know how in FPS games sometimes you come around a corner and there's another player right there, and you dance around each other, bunnyhopping, a/d/a/d'ing? That's essentially what fighter combat in SC is. The only difference is the challenge of actually controlling your ship compared to controlling an FPS char, but once you get a handle on that the essential nature of the combat is right there in your face. How fun would an FPS game consisting solely of such encounters be? There's no real tactics, no "terrain," no sniping or getting the drop on anyone. (Well you can get the drop on someone, but only in the most boring way possible.) You just fly to within range, then let the bunnyhopping commence. There's a huge divide between players that can control their ships and those who can't (which isn't helped by the lack of a tutorial), differences in native ability and gear when it comes to aiming and varying degrees of familiarity with the meta, but strip those away and the essence of combat is just two players in a small space, bunnyhopping and a/d/a/d'ing away. So far the only thing we've heard from CIG that'll change going forward is we'll get a lot of granular control over the various ship systems - but that's just adding a layer of complication, it's not adding depth to the combat. Where's the ability to outplay someone? To out-think them? Discuss
