So unless I missed a memo, the most recent thing CIG said to us about hex paints was "they work, but they're not player-facing because we don't have a good UI designed for the players to use them with." Which is a fair thing to say. However, I wonder if maybe someone isn't overestimating the level of complexity that's actually required for such a system to reach a level that is entirely adequate for player use.
