Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action That quote from Ian Fleming embodies my concern that SQ42 (and SC by entension) is suffering from consolitis The first signs of this terrible disease appeared on the UI front. The new looting UI, the MFDs, the radial menu thingy... it all seemed like very gamepad-centric design. At the time I dismissed the signs of infection because, well, quite frankly the SC UI has always beein a disappointment. It could very well be the case that they just designed poor PC UI, after all, once is happenstance. Then it came that infamous question on Bar Citizen in China (I forgot which city) where they asked the people there whether they would like to see the game in consoles. Twice is coincidence But now, the weapon control group thing happened: that's an entirely different department heading towards the exact same gamepad-centric direction. Three times is enemy action. The fact that most of these changes came as they are now migrating the stuff they developed behind closed doors for SQ42 seems to indicate that this was at the forefront of their work for SQ42. This is clearly not a good sign. Now, I am not a PC master race absolutist that would throw a riot if SQ42 (or even SC) came to consoles: I'm perfectly fine with that as long as the game design isn't compromised. I also I understand that a lot of PC players use a gamepad to play: I am not saying that SQ42/SC shouldn't work on gamepads or have them in mind while designing their systems. However, there's a difference between implementing something that works on gamepads and implementing something that is gamepad centric at the expense of other input devices, which is seemingly what is happening here. The control group thing is probably the best example of this: it is objectively bad for both keyboard + mouse users and HOTAS/HOSAM/HOSAS. By (apparently) prioritizing gamepads it made the experience worse for the majority of the PC players. At the very least, a PC space sim should work well on the input devices most used on PC (mouse + keyboard) and flight/space sims (HOTAS/HOSAS/HOSAM), that should be the priority. If they can't come up with a system that works well for those and gamepad at the same time, then they need to develop two independent systems (like some console games whose PC port shipped with an entirely different UI). And if that is not possible, then I'm sorry gamepad users, but you shouldn't be the priority here. I would very much like an official remark on whether or not these concerns are founded (not holding my breath though) Edit: the fire group thing appears to have been patched to some extent after the outrage, though the fact that pip doesn't support shows that it wasn't designed with that in mind. I believe that the point still stands: if it was designed with the input devices used by the majority of the PC players in mind, then a version with only one trigger wouldn't have existed.
