This is the most common trend in the few complaint posts I’ve seen on spectrum since new info about planned mechanics have been released ie medical gameplay, local inventories, full looting. The subtext is always that unless CIG changes these types of mechanics to cater to what these posters want and make SC just like other games then the game will fail. This is patently absurd and incredibly childish. What are these post saying? They are essentially saying: “The game must cater to me or it will fail.” People like this need to understand that SC is a niche game. However it is a niche game with millions of backers, many of whom did actually research what the game is aiming to be. A game can be niche and still be very successful and have a very long lifespan. Another related refrain I keep seeing is: “once CIG actually releases these features most players will leave so CIG will see the light and change these core mechanics to something much more mainstream/light/casual that I prefer and am familiar with.” If you think that will happen then you are 100% wrong and have fundamentally misunderstood what the SC project is. What does full loot actually mean in Star Citizen? If you feel some kind of dread when you read about these long planned mechanics then you either misunderstand how they work (and are stuck with a traditional mmo mental-image which is not SC) or you are a casual gamer who probably will never be happy with what SC is going to be. There are no high level raids with tough bosses which drop RNG high-tier loot drops which players will farm non-stop. You will never have a +10 fire damage gun and +20 strength armor. So when a player (or even NPC) kills you and you lose your gear it’s really not the end of the world. You can just rebuy some gear from a shop or grab some from your hanger/hab that you stored previously. The vast majority of gear is not as rare or as important in SC. SC is not WoW (which is centered around grinding gear) You won’t be losing your precious hard-to-get gear, you’ll be losing generic gear that you can easily replace. Special items will almost certainly be insurable and re-purchasable from select locations. Why is this even an issue, why not just remove full loot to bring in more players? Many many of us backers are excited about inhabiting a game world which has never been possible until now. You see a moon in the distance, you can fly to it. You see a mountain on the surface you can land on it. You see an enemy on the ground, you can kill him. The enemy is wearing a specific armor chest piece, you can take it (even though it’s probably damaged from the bullets you just shot to kill him) Many of us have always been frustrated by gamey shortcuts and limitations in other games ie loading screens, sharded instancing, and yes even the feeling of annoyance when I just killed this player/npc but I don’t actually get what they’re carrying. SC is finally bringing many of us what we’ve been craving for decades. That is why we keep throwing money at the project despite the bugs and slow progress. If we wanted a cookie cutter traditional (and lazy shortcut-ridden MMO) then we wouldn’t have backed SC we would’ve paid for one of the many many casual-focused mainstream MMOs. What kind of game is Star Citizen really? Star Citizen is a space/universe sim, which in and of itself is a niche. If you dispute that SC is a niche game then you haven’t read about or researched the game at all. It is a space sim repeatedly described by CR and CIG as their attempt at the "Best Damn Space/Verse sim" for years and years. But it is a niche game with millions of backers. It won’t ever surpass/overtake user numbers of games like Call of Duty or any other mainstream game. But here’s the kicker, it doesn’t have to. SC can go on for decades with just a few hundred thousand users (not even daily concurrent users) and we already have millions of backers who’ve shown they are willing to keep funding the game. CR is not making this game to reach the widest audience possible or to make the most money possible (if he was making SC for that purpose then or course we wouldn’t have full loot and PvP) CR is making this game to realize his vision and dream of making the best damn space/universe sim ever to exist. CR and CIG have repeatedly discussed these planned mechanics (like full loot and medical gameplay/DoaSM again and again over the years. Do you really think the vast majority of millions of backers didn’t do any research and just backed without knowing anything about the project? Of course they didn’t. Now if you think players will leave in droves because CIG is actually delivering on their promises then you’re delusional. In fact the exact opposite will occur, many backers who have been waiting for these mechanics to dive into the game now (and many more will once server meshing and other important tech comes online) If you don’t like the long-planned and repeatedly mentioned mechanics or are scared by them (because you’re don’t understand them or because you just don’t like niche games) you should really reconsider why you backed SC. There are many traditional casual-friendly mainstream games. If you feel comfortable with those types of games then go play them. Don’t join the SC community and advocate to change SC (the one game that is trying to do something no others have done or are willing to do) to be more like those traditional games. Can Star Citizen survive as a niche game? SC will be fine as a niche game and can go on for decades BECAUSE it is niche. It will not “fail” because it doesn’t conform to traditional mainstream norms. Let SC be SC. Finally, even if you have doubts, give it a chance nonetheless. Wait and see how these mechanics play out. Once the game goes to beta or is “released” the systems will be refined, many of bugs will be worked out and necessary tech will be online. The game might actually surprise you and many of your fears might be unfounded. So instead of instantly reaching tor the “SC will fail because I don’t like/am scared of X and Y mechanics” take a breath, wait and see what actually does happen. It won’t be at all like what the fear mongers would have you believe. SC is a popular niche game. The sky is not falling, things will be alright. TL;dr - SC will be just fine and will be around for decades exactly because it is niche game WITH these mechanics and many backers actually want that and backed the game for them specifically.
