The new kit for the Idris with Torps launcher is a real Polaris killer. While I love the idris and find it's an interesting tradeoff versus the railgun or new beam cannon, this is a real problem to me. -The size 12 torpedoes currently have over 1000 hp, while those on the Polaris don't even have 90 hp. Now that all ships are going to be fitted with PDCs, this becomes a real problem and a huge difference, because with 1000 hp, the PDCs won't be able to stop a full salvo of torpedoes. - The idris can fire all 4 tubes at once, whereas the polaris has 4 separate tubes, so there's a time lag between each tube and the torpedoes go off one after the other. What's more, the reload time is global, so you can't even fire a torpedo at one target and a second torpedo at another without suffering a cooldown (even though all 4 tubes are loaded). - The pilot has control of the torpedoes (whereas on the Polaris you need a dedicated member on a stupid console) - and that's the worst of it: as well as doing a huge amount of damage for nothing (initially the laserbeam had to deactivate the shield to fire because it consumed so much energy, but that doesn't seem to be the case any more), as well as being an instant hitscan, we've added an aimbot that can literally laser-aim fighters or sub-components (while we've added a stupid spread on the Ares Inferno to stop it crushing LF boys who refused to do anything other than fly in a straight line against an S7). In my opinion, the real problem is that the Polaris is no longer of interest, no longer has a niche. Its specificity should have been to be a torpedo boat, anti-capital, “fast” (for its category) and lethal. - The idris can fulfil this torpedo role, and better (S12 torpedoes vs S10 on the polaris). - The Polaris is no longer fast or agile + The recent explanations that the S3 and S4 will do NOTHING to a capital ship finish off the Polaris. It's now a ‘capital’ ship that serves no purpose other than to ‘finish off’ ships that are already half dead. Its weapons don't allow it to engage its natural targets effectively enough (it only has the S6 left to hope to do something, but that means being in range where the other ships will cut it to pieces). Of course, you can't have the same expectations and ambitions as a ship that costs twice as much and has twice the required crew, but I think that's a bit excessive. I feel like I'm seeing the nerf redeemer > Paladin announcement pattern all over again.
