I will assert that CIG is a visionary game company. Star Citizen is huge. Star Citizen is beautiful. Star Citizen provides a wide variety of gameplay options to suit every player. I will also assert that CIG is an absolute crap software company. They are 13 years into a video game build. For reference, the following things took less than 13 years to build. Hoover Dam The Space Shuttle USS Nimitz Hubble Space Telescope The World Trade Center The Panama Canal 13 years is a long time in any engineering effort. In software terms, if you are 13 years into it and still justifying the project’s shortcomings by uttering the incantation “It’s an alpha!” then you are doing it wrong. Alpha software should be treated like alpha software, and CIG is not doing that. Alpha software does not get new content, artwork, events, and other post-release materials. Alpha software gets the platform working so you can reliably deliver all that other cool stuff. All the new ships, guns, missions, events, and other activities are absolutely meaningless if inventory doesn’t work. They are meaningless if quest items don’t spawn. They are meaningless if navigation doesn’t work. They are meaningless if you can't get out of your hangar. Those things must be dead reliable and work every time. If you are 13 years into development and they fail as frequently as they do now, it isn’t because “it’s an alpha.” If you are 13 years into it and still suffering release and regression problems this bad, it’s not because “it’s an alpha.” If you are 13 years into it and having as many outages as you are now, it isn’t because “it’s an alpha.” It’s because “it’s an alpha” has become a wall to hide behind. It’s because “it’s an alpha” has become an easy excuse for being a bad software company. So, CIG. In game terms, git gud. Do better. Either stop calling it an alpha and we will all adjust to the crap quality or treat it like an alpha and focus on ensuring the functionality is there before you focus on new content.
