As someone who is new(ish) to the game and has now had an equal amount of time spent in both flight models, I feel I can provide a unique perspective on these two experiences. While I come from a competitive background, I also thoroughly enjoy PVE/RPG games and have had a lot of fun bantering with folks in the industrial gameplay loops. The previous flight model, what I like to call the "Free Flight Model", gave players complete control of their unrestricted, fully activated spaceship. Every button press was a decision made by you, the player. This wasn't easy to master, but it was something you explored as you went along, getting to know the mechanics and learning how to fly your ship. In Master Modes, your ships have been given guide rails and a hand to hold you. This sounds nice, but in reality it is dangerous. It is now easier than ever to 100 to 0 someone who doesn't want to pvp. Your only mode options are now slow/shielded or fast/unprotected. You are trapped. As a new player, I found the Free Flight Model to be empowering. From seeing how quickly I can land, to netting my first player bounty kill, everything felt earned. Now I can just show up with superior firepower and hit them before they even knew what happened. PVE folks, you need to understand that you've been limited too. A Hauler deploying their landing gear is stuck in a certain speed, a salvager has to cycle through literally several "modes" before deploying their tools, and anyone not wanting to die to someone who can just aim race them needs to pray that they're in a safe place because they literally can't do anything if they're attacked. Anyone on the highway who has experienced a swervy driver knows that sometimes, speeding past them is the safest thing you can do.
