Just what the title says. I'll be sitting out this anniversary sale for the first time in years. The reason is simple. I do not believe that CIG has earned my continuing support this year. A line has to be drawn somewhere beyond which the goalposts can't move and excuses just won't wash anymore. For me, they've hit that line. They are not on a trajectory toward delivering the game(s) that they pitched to us, the backers, in any reasonable time frame, and they are either unable or unwilling to tell us how they're going to rectify that. Nice videos telling us what they're working on are great, but I'm looking for results now. A few tangible things will have to happen before I become an active backer again: 1. A SQ42 Release Date: Sorry Chris, this game was supposed to ship in 2016. You assured us that timeline surely wouldn't stretch beyond 2018. You gave us a roadmap that said it'd hit beta last quarter. Now you want to tell us "it's done when it's done"? Nope. Not good enough. 2. The Roadmap You Promised Months Ago: And no, a roadmap that shows us that you have lots of teams and that all those teams are busy isn't good enough. It had better have some tangible milestones on it that allow us to gauge whether you are performing, or not. 3. The Core Tech: Offering up new space ships for us to drool over is a little unconscionable when you are very, very late delivering the core tech that will allow us to use them in any meaningful way at scale. If you want me to give you more money, don't show me an anti-capital ship for 600 bucks. Show me the tech that will let me fly the capital ship that I already have. Yes, that means server meshing, iCache, and all the bits that those depend upon, not to mention servers whose uptime before crashing isn't measured in hours. It means tangible evidence that what you've built over 8 years can run smoothly and reliably enough to be playable at MMO scale. All the features and content in the world aren't going to matter if the foundation isn't there. You said you were going to treat us with the same respect that a publisher would get. Sorry, friend. I'm not feeling it. A publisher would expect you to execute against your stated plans, and you're not. Not even close. So while you might not feel like treating me like a publisher, I'm going to treat you like one. No more song and dance routines. If you want more money, show me that you can get this done. When the next sale rolls around, and you ask me for money again, I will give you some if you've addressed my "big 3" above. If not, you can expect no more backing from me until you do. For the record, I am not trying to organize a boycott of the upcoming sale. If you're reading this, though, I would encourage you to consider what your own bottom line is that CIG must meet to earn your continuing support. Otherwise, you are in serious danger of falling prey to sunk-cost fallacy, and throwing good money after bad long after you should have.
