As a backer who has been here from the beginning, I am not so sure anymore how many original backers are still lingering around or if their numbers are still relevant to funding but if they are relevant, I believe CIG's top management has some explaining to do here regarding the direction they want to take and if they really want to keep favoring PvP as they do now. While I understand the writing has been on the wall for the last couple of years and Rich Tyrer made it blatantly clear during last Citizencon that he is not focused on NPCs for 1.0 delivery, I really would like to know if this game will really embrace the current PvP centric vision moving forward. You may be asking yourself what the presence of NPCs (title) has to do with PvP, and the answer is everything: In the world Tony Z originally pitched with Quanta, there would be a ratio of 9 NPCs for each 1 player. This ratio, for many backers represented a diluted risk of PvP, thus making it an acceptable risk for a large part of the playerbase that were more interested in PvE activities (farming, hunting, data running, bounty hunting etc...). If for each encounter there is only a 10% chance I am dealing with someone trying to sabotage my game or kill me, even though I may not like that type of gameplay, I will take my chances. Well, the scenario above is officially out the window so where does that leave CIG and the PvE playerbase? While I understand that NPCs may be hard to implement and it is quite possible that Rich is picking a minimum viable product choice to remove them for the 1.0 release, I want to point out that ALLOWING PvP is also a choice Rich Tyrer (and Chris Roberts) is making. I mean, if CIG can choose to not implement NPCs for a 1.0 delivery, they could ALSO choose to turn off PvP for 1.0 delivery and maybe turn it on when NPCs are actually in the game... hopefully in a 2.0 release? I really would like to get a clear answer from CIG here because while the PvP playerbase has suffered no major loss with the direction SC has been taking the past couple of years, the PvE crowd, in my opinion keeps getting slapped in the face with PvP, more PvP and a promise of even more PvP in the future. I will be honest, that is NOT what I signed up for and I think if we cannot have NPCs, why can't we also turn off PvP momentarily and turn it on later when all proper security mechanics and NPCs are in game? You know... after 1.0 release? While at first this may sound like a radical idea, I think it is a reasonable idea if you take into account you have more PvE backers than PvP backers. I mean, it is clearly not working properly as it is. Why not turn it off until it is fixed or in a reasonable state? I know SC was always pitched as a PvPvE game but, again, PvPvE in the world Tony Z pitched was very different from the PvPvE we have now. The same way you have plenty of PvP only players, I want you to understand you also have A LOT of PvE only players as well and you are at risk of losing a lot of them.
