There are many practical and game play considerations regarding blind quantum jumps (i.e. engaging quantum drive without a specific end-point defined). These considerations have been discussed extensively in various threads on this forum. I just wanted to state my primary reason, a reason that to me overrides all the other reasons: The feeling of total freedom I have when I can point my ship in any direction I choose, and engage the Quantum Drive! As said by Captain Kirk, in the 1979 Star Trek Motion Picture, Helm control: "Heading, Sir?" (Kirk waving generally in a random direction) "Out, there... Thataway!" The way I like to explore is to go for a while, about as long as I feel like it. Then I drop out of QT, scan the area, choose a new direction and jump again. I might decide to explore one particular corner of a system in detail, for no particular reason other than it caught my fancy. It is the ability to do this that is so central to me. Not its usefulness. Just the sense that if I go where I expect no one else has gone, I might find something no one else has found. Maybe I find something, that would be fun. Maybe I never find anything, that would be fine too. Or maybe I just hang around in deep, cold, dark space, far away from everything for a little while, because sometimes that is what I feel like. There are those that wonder why I would go somewhere when, without any scan data, hints or leads, I have no clue what is at the destination. I don't even know where the destination is! To these people, I can only respond: That is the whole point... I think it might be important that there sometimes is something. Maybe so rarely that most players never encounter anything, but there are some that do, and that gets talked about on the forums. EDIT: The main point of my post is the emotional aspect, this is my main reason for wanting free QT to anywhere. However, the thread has inevitably gone to the practical considerations, claiming that this is impossible. If you want to QT to any precise location, it is of course rather hard to drop out at the right moment when going 0.2c; if you miss the moment by +/-0.05s, you end up 6 million meters off target. However there are many ways precise drop-out could be handled; all you need is a way of specifying where the drop-out moment should be in advance. This can be specified at any point in time before the drop-out moment. So, it could be before the jump is initiated (i.e. you first set the length or duration of your QT before you point your ship and jump), during the jump (you enter mobiglas and mark a spot for drop-out along the line you are travelling), or manually choosing a spot on a map as your destination before entering QT. I prefer the "set distance, point ship and jump"-UI for it's more visceral feel, it feels less abstract than marking a point on a map, but nothing prevents a choice of several different methods, and any method that lets me go anywhere I like would satisfy me. In regards to escaping from a PvP attack, this post is completely unrelated to combat! I am perfectly fine with disabling QT entirely as long as a hostile ship is in sensor range. All I want is just to go "out there" to see what is there.
