It seems as if people haven't actually figured these things out yet, so maybe I can illustrate why there seems to be, and will continue to be a growing disparity between travel times (tl;dr- you get none) To start out, I'm going to give general stat comparisons between current quantum drives, using small drives as a base: Speed: The average speed of a small drive (excluding Siren, because it's useless) is .01763 AU/min The average speed of a medium drive in comparison is 1.73 times faster (.03050 AU/min) The average speed of a large drive in comparison is 2.65 times faster (.04668 AU/min) Time per jump For me, I'm going to reduce the calculations to just using the average speed. So, here we go: If you look at all of the drives, you see that- small drives will use up .47 units of fuel/sec medium uses .94 or 1.41 units of fuel/sec (I'm averaging this to 1.18), so ~2.5 times more fuel/sec large drives uses 2.82 units of fuel/sec, so ~6 times more fuel/sec Now, we look at the sizes of the fuel tanks, which are thus- All small ships but the terrapin, 300 series, Mustang Beta, 85x, and Aurora LX has a fuel tank size of 583 units, with the exceptions being 700 units This averages to 641.5 units. Medium ships have a verity of sizes, being 2,500, 3,000, or in the DUR's case with its extended tanks, 5,000 This averages to 3500 units, or 5.456 times more fuel on average than small ships. Large ships have currently only hold 11,000 units of fuel, or 17.15 times more fuel than small ships. This gives a time per jump of- 22 minutes and 32 seconds for small drives 49 minutes and 26 seconds on average for medium drives, so ~ 2.2 times longer than small drives 65 minutes for large ships, so ~2.9 times longer longer than small drives Total Distance of flight per tank So, looking past any issue that could stop a ship from doing its max jump distance, Small ships can, on average, do .4149 AU per jump Medium ships can, on average, do 1.538 AU per jump, so ~3.7 times further than small drives Large ships can, on average, do 3.034 AU per jump, so ~7.3 times further than small drives Context and conclusion (for now) To give you context, in the star map, the average system diameter is ~ 40 AU across. ingame scaling, that puts a jump like that around 5.7 AU. So literally every ship outside of capitals won't be able to make those jumps, however, you'll usually be able to realistically get jumps within 20 AU due to orbits, so a little less than 3 AU ingame. This means that, still, to make it all the way through, you'll need a large ship. otherwise, you're stopping at least twice, if not more (in the case of small ships, you're stopping around 7 times, which will be an extra 42 minutes at least). Considering that we have most of the ships designed as escorts, and a ton of other small ships that are supposed to be "long ranged", to not be able to go halfway across an AVERAGE system on one tank is silly. On top of that, you've effective made large ships, with stock equipment around 3 times faster than small ships. Sure, they drink a hell of a lot more gas, but who cares? You'll be making that money back and then some, no matter what you're doing. With this current design, the point of small ships is pretty much non-existent. This needs some heavy adjusting. btw, for those wondering, no, you can't make it out of Stanton if you leave from PO and try to cross the system to a JP in a small ship. You'll be out of fuel before you get there, and even if you didn't, you'll be so low that you'd probably die in the JP itself. I must have been half asleep when I wrote this, it doesn't really matter considering that JP's aren't static. Moving on. Discuss Blub EDIT: I'd just like to note that I, as of about 5 minutes ago, discovered that CR made a thread on this very issue, and from what it seems to me, CIG has started to lose the plot on their own game A prime example is this thread within the post: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/3/thread/quantum-drives/2031225 I think that CIG decided that it was going to do all of these things, in midswing, decided that it was going to make a whole new bat, and let the bat go fly into someone. I know that the article is pretty trash, but that Forbes article speaking on how SC has been and is poorly managed seems to be right in this very case, because this screams mismanagement to me. EDIT 2: Seeing as people keep on making the assertion that either I'm saying it has to be super long travels, or instant gratification, and I'm leaning on the latter, or that they're saying that, and I'm sick of responding to that, I'm posting this post here. Please actually read what I'm saying as well; there's no reason to infer anything, as I'm saying everything as plainly as I can: After reading through, and doing more calculations, I've come up with this fix- Normalizing both speed and heat of QD's to the ratios that large drives have Giving every ship class an average of 150% more fuel (I'd also suggest segmenting the fuel tanks more, so that ships that are supposed to travel further actually have that advantage, and that it's a clear one). Doing the above would solve every issue CIG has created in regards to the time to travel to locations. The random annoyance that comes with a perfectly running small drive disappears, as well as the annoyance with the amount of time it takes to get around even tiny systems, on top of the fact that the logistic problem between every ship class disappears (although fuel past a certain range will still be an issue, and thus would mean that Vulcans and SF's will still be quite useful). Small ships can now actually move around average sized systems (albeit only sections of it at a time), medium craft have no issues in this regard, and large ships can actually do some system hopping, as they've been described to be able to do. Literally the only "issue" this doesn't fix is the whole "crossing a large system under an hour" thing, but tbh, that's not really necessary, especially given the scale of even tiny systems like Stanton. I'd say that being able to jump through multiple of those systems in an hour is a better way of looking at it.
