I've seen a lot of people excited and worked up about the Valkyrie and how amazing the concept was minus a few shortfalls and one major one. Cargo. I've heard a handful of people screaming that the Valkyrie doesn't need cargo because it's a dropship, a troop transport. I'm positive I am not the only person with military experience in here who can vouch that a troop transport is not just "a troop transport", troops rely on those air-frames to keep them supplied in combat, when you're in an area too far from ground support or terrain too difficult to navigate, the same aircraft that bring you into the fight are the same ones that provide your lifeline to keep fighting. I'm not going to go into long drawn out detail about troop transports and their many different roles in supporting ground troops, if you're a civilian and you'd like a run down on it I'm happy to provide a link at the bottom of this post where I speak on it in more detail. ------------------------------ What I DO want to talk about though are the people who have been confronted about troop transports needing cargo, and instead decide to push the goal post to "Well it would break balance if you gave the Valkyrie cargo!" 1. The Valkyrie comes in at a price point of $330 Warbond or $375 RSI credit. It carries 20 Troops , One Vehicle, and Zero SCU. I see a lot of people who seem to think that the Valkyrie carries two vehicles, you can stuff two in, but that is not right load, that's the "If it fits, it sits" load. 2. I've seen a lot of people say "well if you can put stuff in there by hand it's fine." Please remember that what Star Citizen has right now, is not the end game cargo system. When Star Citizen gets further along, anything loaded into ships not secured by Cargo Plates are loose ballistic objects in flight. 3. The "It Breaks The Balance" argument. At a price point of $330-380 , the Valkyrie carries zero cargo.......yet the Cutlass carries 6 troops in it's cargo bay seating, can store dragonfly/Nox/or Cyclones (CIG made the troop seats raise for loading the Cyclone if you've been out of the loop)....while still being able to carry cargo. A ship that costs $230 less and is manufactured by a private company for "mercenaries and totally not pirates" has more versatility than a ship that costs more than three times that and is a "military purpose built craft." 4. I've seen people insist that this ship would make cargo haulers irrelevant, and I don't see that at all. If the Valkyrie was given cargo locking on the same plates that lock the vehicle it would keep it as an incredibly inefficient cargo hauler in comparison to other options while still allowing it to fulfill it's duty as a troop transport ship. The Valkyrie is one of the best designed ships I have ever seen come out of CIG, it isn't perfect, but overall it's incredibly well done. Giving this ship, or any drop ship, the inability to pull any secured cargo at all, is a terrible design choice. This post is my attempt to help raise awareness both to the function a troop ship should serve, as well as point out the issues in the counter arguments I have seen people screaming against the backer community that is pushing for the Valkyrie to be given justice. If you aren't familiar with Troop Transport ships, I cover it in this video: https://youtu.be/q27zDccJqK0 If you'd prefer not to watch a video, in summary: Troops use air transports like the CH-47 and UH-60 to insert into combat and rely on those same airframes to keep them in the fight, those ships have multiple configurations they can set on the interior of the aircraft to deliver needed supplies, equipment, or additional troops. There is no reason, in parallel to real military craft serving this role, nor balance, that a drop ship should have ZERO cargo. Restricted to keep them in line? Sure..but to say they should have nothing when we already have a $100 ship capable of sporting an array of weapons , carrying vehicles, carrying troops, and carrying cargo - makes no sense. Thanks for your time Citizen!
