Survey distant frontiers and seek the undiscovered reaches of the galaxy with MISC’s Odyssey, the most advanced exploration ship available to civilian starfarers. The onboard refinery, ship hangar, built-in mining tech and tractor beam, expansive supply hold, and comprehensive accommodation for a crew of six all allow you to tame the furthest reaches of space, remaining self-sufficient almost indefinitely. Discover a new life deep among the stars. Or as the great Jax Mcleary says: "...supposedly, it basically becomes your own personal space station. Imagine just taking this thing out as far as you can, dropping anchor and just living." That is what this ship is meant for. That is the kind of exploration this ship is meant to do. The Carrack is a pathfinder, it is meant to find out how to get somewhere. Hence all the jump point related features. It goes out, finds out how to get somewhere, and comes back. The Odyssey is the second stage of exploration, it goes somewhere and just stays there. Living in its chosen temporary home for as long as it likes, doing whatever it likes, until it wants to come home. It literally is a self propelled space station. You load it up with your Terrapin (this would be my personal choice), 315p, Beta, Nomad, whatever your runabout of choice is. Stock the cargo hold full of food and water, and just go out and live in the black. Everyone seems so focused on how much UEC the ship can produce per hour. That's not what this ship is for, nor is exploration going to be some massively profitable game loop. If all you want is credits, the Hull series should be what you set your sights on. If you want to experience what life would be like living on the fringes of space, far from aid, surviving by your own wits and skill, then this is the ship for you. While I'm here, no, I don't think CIG miss-sold this ship. The oft touted "carrack killer" line was one devs personal opinion of the ship, not official marketing materiel. It is sold as "the most advanced exploration ship", and arguably it is. Sure the Carrack is better at finding jump points, but it doesn't have the fuel self sufficiency that the Odyssey does. What's the primary limiting factor in how far you can go in your ship? Fuel. How many other ships can refuel themselves? Only the Odyssey. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SCANNERS! What about them? CIG specifically says: ...that doesn’t mean the Odyssey is incapable of performing these functions. A lot of future exploration gameplay mechanics will be driven from stations using MFDs, so the lack of a dedicated room doesn’t stop the activity from happening. CIG is literally saying the Odyssey doesn't have a dedicated scanning room, because it doesn't need one. It can do all those functions from the bridge MFDs. It doesn't have a dedicated exploration scanner, because it doesn't need one. All scanners can do exploration scanning, and last I checked, the Odyssey has a large radar, just like the Carrack. TL;DR: People freaking out about the Odyssey never understood what the ship was designed for in the first place. If you want to be Indiana Jones in space, the Odyssey will be the ship for that.
