I don't get why there is (still) such a huge debate about PvP in the PU. We know the PU will have options for PvP. There are whole game systems dedicated to creating conflict between players to encourage PvP on various levels, whether it is in the form of competition for trade contracts, a race to gather rare resources to actual combat, a huge amount of challenge in the PU is to be derived from conflict with other players. Did you just get some sweet intel on a premium asteroid? Better get their fast and stake your claim or someone else may mine it out before you even get there. That is a form of PvP. Is that asteroid in a lawless sector? better bring some big guns as backup, least your competition try to pry you off your claim by force of arms. That is another level of PvP. Don't mind the first form of PvP, but detest the second? Keep your mining to secure space, and make all your mining claims through legitimate channels, that way you can call in NPC law enforcement to help you with players intent on using the second form of PvP to get ahead. Does that mean you will never face the second form of PvP? Not at all. That part of the game is an integral part of the challenge in the PU. For the players looking to use force to get ahead, raiding in secure space is probably their highest challenge. What you get for staying in secure space is a huge advantage in the form of NPC fighter cover, immediate access to the bounty system to call in player support, and system saturation ensuring that the pirate players have no safe harbor without making it to a jump point first. Those are all huge advantages for the player looking to avoid a shooting conflict, but again it is no guarantee. It cannot be a guarantee in the PU, since the whole point of having these escalating tiers of PvP is that they are there to use if you want to accept the risks of doing so. There is challenge on both sides; for players looking to avoid pew pew their challenge is in minimizing their exposure while maximizing their opportunity. For players looking to use the pew pew to get ahead the challenge is actually finding enough juicy targets to exploit while not getting killed (either before or after looting the target) while still making a profit. If you really want to avoid combat your goal is to make yourself a target with too much risk for too little reward. Those are the rules in effect for the PU. That is part of the challenge for everyone. Ok, so what if you just cannot abide by those rules? You want PvE only, and you want players engaging you in PvP banned (or fined into oblivion or whatever). You refuse to accept the risk of PvP combat. Is SC just not for you? Well yes and no. As it stands, the PU is definitely not for you. Combat will always be an option. You can make it extremely risky for you opponent if you play smart, but a truly great pirate will probably still be able to get you if they can find you (and get away afterwards). There is always a small risk to a merchant or miner. That risk can never be reduced to zero. But SC does have the promise of private servers. These will not have the full experience of the PU, but they will still offer you the ability to play in the way you want. You hate combat with a passion? Join a server community dedicated to trade and mining, where combat damage is disabled. That was one of the examples given when the private server mechanic was first pitched. Sure you are not competing with the entire SC community, but lets be honest, you wanted to play sans PvP, so you were never interested in competing against the entire community anyway. This really cannot happen any other way. If you insist on having an option to eliminate or mitigate PvP combat for those who do not want it, what you are arguing for is an option to instantly grant yourself a financial advantage over those who choose not to employ it. You will have the ability to complete trade, exploration or mining opportunities faster and with a greater success rate than those who chose not to employ those options. This will gain you better reputation, with a better ability to negotiate contracts (another PvP activity, just not one centered around combat) and you will have a higher profit margin. You may even be able to garner for yourself universe wide accolades with minimal risk, such as the discovery of a jump point at the edge of a secure sector where NPC police support is thin. Meanwhile your competitor, who was not using the "No PvP" option got jumped by pirates, because the edge of a secure sector is the safest place for pirates to prowl due to longer NPC police response times. You got the recognition and reward because he was playing a tougher game than you. That is simply not a fair mechanic, and therefor it has no place in the PU.
