The original vision of Star Citizen was to be a space simulation. It once was advertised with the words "I AM A SPACE SIM". The way we go currently, we turn away further and further from this vision. We once were told that we are backing for making the space sim game that we all have always been dreaming of. Not lead by publishers that only look for more profit. Those were Chris his words, not mine. Right now, 12 years later, we finally are getting the 2nd star system in. Pyro is coming! Yay! Or not yay? With the latest patch, CIG has increased the Quantum Fuel capacity of all ships. This is wrong on so many levels. I will elaborate, why. The fact that Pyro is almost 3 x the size of Stanton and a lawless region was about to bring multiple new factors and gameplay loops into the verse. Not only by new mechanics, but also by finally making older mechanics valuable. Finally there was a real purpose for people that have bought a Starfarer over the past 12 years. Finally, they would be really worth it. This would have made the Starfarer and the refueling mechanic really valuable. This in exchange would be the first real time, that PvP players have a reason to interact with PvE players! That both play styles would have an actual benefit of each other and that PvP players would have a reason to defend those PvE players. You need fuel? Hire a Starfarer crew to refuel you! You want to PvP? Become an escort of a Starfarer on their dangerous road through Pyro, the system where everyone needs a refuel! It could have been so good. But with the increase of the Quantum Fuel for all ships across the board, this basically was yeeted from the verse. Such a tiny decision, but it has a massive effect and prohibited so many possible gameplay loops. Why would that make any sense? I guess it is to allow players with whatever ships to enjoy Pyro. I guess it is for players that chose Pyro as their starting location to not being stranded somewhere in Pyro. But why is that an absolutely bad idea? Well, the reasons are simple. A small ship is not supposed to fly long range distance! If you want to fly long range distances, then get a bigger ship! Play the game, earn your way so you actually have the resources to survive in Pyro! That´s the whole point of having smaller ships and long range ships, which basically became irrelevant with this change, as much as the Starfarer became irrelevant. But how should players start in Pyro then, you might ask? Easy Answer - NOT AT ALL! There is no single MMO, may it be fantasy or science fiction, where players start their initial journey in a hard area or sector. You ALWAYS have starting regions with low level threats and the more you grow in power, the further you can go into more dangerous and challenging territories. The absolute same should count for Star Citizen. So, instead of making the game more and more casual and by this yeeting and prohibiting actual enriching gameplay loops like refueling, coop gameplay of PvE and PvP, you should simply remove Pyro as Initial Starting Location Option. Pyro should not be a possibility at all as initial residence. Players should start the game in a safe space, where they can earn their way up, until they are naturally able to go to more dangerous territories. And if they do it before that, then they either can hire a Starfarer if they´re out of fuel, or it´s their own fault. By all means - Stick to the original vision of making a deeply detailed space sim and, as the header says, stop making the game casual! It is not and never was supposed to be! EDIT: After having some conversations in the comments - It might make sense to have Pyro as a starting location for the sake of world building. But then better give a warning in the initial spawn location that this choice potentially comes with negative consequences, rather than tuning down the game to casual for everyone. It´s fine to increase Quantum Fuel for ships that are supposed to have longer range abilities, such as larger multicrew or single seater exploration ships, but not every single ship across the board. Here my initial points about destroying potential gameplay loops, especially for and around refueling and the Starfarer, remain valid.
