"While you will still be able to lock onto a target for missiles above SCM, missile firing can now only occur while flying below SCM speed." Do you realize what this means? This means that if another player, lawful OR criminal (piracy is a valid game mechanic too, but lets take the bounty hunter route for purposes of examples here), is running from you.... You cant pursue and engage them to stop them anymore... Say i'm pursuing a bounty target with crimestat 5, and he's 6km away, starting to accelerate away at 1km/s. I do the same to pursue him, but given how ships in SC are mostly between 1km/s to 1.2km/s in top speed variance, we're gonna be pretty equal on speed in most ship to ship cases, so our distance isnt gonna change that much if we both burn at full speed in the same direction.. One pursuing the other. Now imagine my missiles are capable of 10km range, but my gun projectiles fade away beyond 4km. (which is a silly mechanic, but okay its how it is) This means, now i literally cannot engage that enemy. I cannot fire my missiles. I cannot stop him, EVER. In any way. This is even worse for Eclipses or Retaliators.. Sure you might argue the Eclipse is a stealth ambush animal, but what if your target is moving away from you, perhaps down to a moon. They're not gonna be moving at SCM speeds even if they dont know you're behind them, because why would they? The standard travel speed for any player for any reason is max throttle 1km/s.... So you're behind him in your Eclipse (or Retaliator) travelling at 1km/s, but still stealthed. And EVEN if he is within your torpedo range, with this change, YOU CANNOT FIRE YOUR TORPEDO!! This makes NO sense what so ever CIG.... How the heck is a player supposed to engage a fleeing target, or even a non-fleeing target that doesnt even know you're there? This is just a ridiculous change. Especially in zero-g. EDIT: So, suggestions to improve this, CIG? Well, you need to tie missile launching by TRANSVERSAL velocity between you and the target (EVE players know what im talking about). As in the image below. I could accept if missiles cant "track the target" thereby lore-magically cant be fired IF the target is moving above SCM speeds in TRANSVERSAL velocity relative to you. So for example, if the target is moving at 1km/s "left to right", while you're moving TOWARDS his side. But if you're moving towards his rear, as he is also moving away from you, your transversal velocity will be next to 0. In other words, if your transversal velocity is almost zero, the missile / torpedo only has to travel straight forward, to hit him. If your transversal velocity is very high, the missile would have to TURN sharply to hit him. Think of it like a submarine firing a torpedo, that has to turn 90 degrees to catch the cargo ship moving sideways. Compared to a submarine firing a torpedo at a cargo ship moving AWAY from you, the torpedo doesnt need to turn.
