Lately, with the steady improvements to Star Citizen’s stability, I’ve found myself diving deeper into the game. I often take out my RSI Zeus for expeditions — stocking up on gear, food, and supplies before heading off to explore Stanton or Pyro. Sometimes I take on missions, sometimes I just roam a moon or a planet for the experience. However, whether it’s in Pyro or Stanton, I find myself having to claim my ship again and again — sometimes several times per session. Every time it happens, it feels like a small failure. Like many players, I wish our ships could last, that they could truly become our homes in the verse — places where we could store valuable equipment, specialized armor, or logistics supplies. But right now, I only ever carry the bare minimum because of how “disposable” ships currently feel. To me, that’s one of the biggest things holding players like myself back from truly investing in the game long term. I know CIG has plans for an insurance system that could eventually cover ship cargo and stored items, and that might help address part of the issue. Still, I think there are also deeper gameplay considerations. For example, after a cargo run recently, I landed at a Citizens for Prosperity outpost in Pyro. While I was inside browsing the shop, another player arrived, saw my ship, and blew it up — simply because he could. I don’t blame the player; the game currently allows it without any real consequences. Luckily, my ship was empty after the mission, so it wasn’t a big loss. I just filed a claim and was flying again two minutes later. But if I had invested time customizing that ship, it would’ve been far more frustrating. That experience made me think: how could we make ship loss less frequent — or at least more meaningful — without removing the danger that makes Pyro exciting? Pyro should feel lawless. The tension, the constant risk — that’s part of what makes Star Citizen’s PvPvE gameplay so unique and alive. I wouldn’t want to lose that. But maybe outposts belonging to certain factions, like the Citizens for Prosperity, could have anti-air defenses that protect residents and allied players. Not enough to make them safe havens, but enough to discourage lone players from blowing up ships just for fun — while still allowing larger groups to overpower them if they really want to. In short, I think it’s time to start exploring gameplay systems that help preserve player possessions and discourage meaningless destruction. What do you think? Do you agree? And what kind of mechanics would you like to see to make ships feel more permanent?
