I'll try to keep this brief. First, I'm sorry for starting two threads about this in quick succession. This will seem like attention whoring and/or virtue signalling, but I just feel that it's important to say. With that out of the way; this thread is an addendum to my last thread "I wish dogfighting was more intimate" (link below). I made two recommendations for how dogfighting should be improved, saying that it should be slower and happen at shorter range. To my surprise, I got a lot of push-back, which turned out to be because my suggestions were made out of ignorance. I have since spent more time in Arena Commander, getting a better sense of how PVP dogfighting is different from PVE dogfighting. A lot of people also helped by posting links to earlier threads, Youtube videos, etc. In short, I had a completely wrong view of what dogfighting in SC is like, mostly because I didn't know how to do it. Well, I still don't know how to do it, but at least now I know how other people do it, at a basic level. My new view of how to fix dogfighting is more nuanced. I do think that it needs to be slowed down in some specific ways (for example, it may not be good for gameplay if everyone can instantly disengage by accelerating to 1300 m/s when their shields start to drop), but I'm now aware that dogfighting already happens at relatively short range in many situations. I've also had the pleasure of playing against people who were really good at staying at really short range, just outside my field of vision. I'd hate for them to get even closer than that. I don't really want to put forward a coherent vision of what dogfighting should be like, because a) I'm still processing and trying to learn more about this b) Other people have already done it better than I could, several times over Mostly I just want to say thanks to everyone who helped me change my mind. This is a great community. Not just helpful, but very knowledgeable. I'm blown away by the knowledge that elite PVPers, real life pilots and people with good understanding of physics bring to the table. Just from my last thread, a quick thanks to @loserkid @mhe @alienwar @Skyfaller @Soziopath and others for taking the time to hash out these things that have been discussed so many times before. My small request in this thread is simply for people to urge CIG to talk more about this. To the extent that CIG wants questions from the community, I'd love to see more members of the community asking and upvoting questions dealing with the flight model and dogfighting. Granted, it's no good asking "How will you fix dogfighting" in the Ask the Devs threads where they want short questions with short answers. But if it's possible to ask about mining mechanics, base building, scanning or the multi-crew piloting experience, then surely it's possible to ask about the afterburner, cruise mode, gimbals, maneuvering thrusters (mavs) or realistic G-forces. Even if asking more specific questions doesn't necessarily mean that we get answers about CIG's grand vision (assuming there is one), it does indicate that this is something the community considers important (assuming it does). And if you see other people asking questions related to the dogfighting, I highly encourage you to upvote them. Even if you completely disagree with my views, it may still be in your interest to get CIG to talk more about this. :slightly_smiling_face: Link to old thread: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/3/thread/i-wish-dogfighting-was-more-intimate/1073113 TL;DR - My last thread was bad and I wish we could make CIG talk more about dogfighting.
