No, it's not clickbait title. Allow me 15 lines to breifly to explain: When a player dies, they should not automatically respawn. They should have the option to wait for an ambulance. To respawn (actually die) should require the player to push a button. Make two different downed states: 1) Unconcious (can be revived with a medgun/what we have today) 2) Dead, but can be revived by a medbed. (for this to work, we should not respawn automatically) So what would that look? 1) You get downed as in the current live game = you can be healed revived with a medgun. You can put up a medbeacon if you're alone. (Edit to add the additional possibility of a one-use self revive kit). 2) You get flushed (hard killed) = black screen with the option to respawn or put up a medbeacon. If you choose the option to put up a medbeacon , another player can drag/tractor beam you to a medbed, where you can be revived. What is the big difference? You don't have to leave the location you're at. You don't have to respawn at all. Another player can bring you back from the dead, but it is more difficult that just being downed. Your body has to be actually physically moved to medbed. Now it's all of a sudden worth waiting for a medic, because by waiting, you can pick up just where you left off. You don't have to respawn, claim a ship, fly back, etc. P.s. This was just a short version. I wrote a longer version with more detail and how do deal with edge cases (like being shot with an Idris railgun, etc.) a while ago here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/4/thread/how-to-make-permadeath-compatible-with-fps-combat- Implementing a system like this makes the game more compatible with death of a spaceman as a bonus.
