Hello all, ----- 2nd Edit: Ty all for the good conversation. Got a lot of good talk going on the topic. You guys are awesome as always. ----- EDIT: Ty all for the good conversation. Several of you were cool enough to point out that this exists: https://youtu.be/UuQFNUA0fow which has some information on the elevators. granted, I am still concerned, because they will still need to get redone, so my rant still stands - but let it be known that they do seem to have taken this into consideration. ---- I figured I'd post this one in forums since it isn't really a bug - but some time ago, we were told that the Levski hangar elevators (which are really just teleporters) would be taken out and replaced with a transit system because theyre nonphysical. However, we have seen them popping up in the rest stops, and now theyre in Lorville as well. The teleporter-vators really need to go. Aside from the fact that they're hardcore immersion-breakers, theyre extremely inconsistent with the rest of CiG's development culture and the message that they put forward of "do it all right and physicalize it". The trains are physicalized, the elevators in Grim Hex and the main elevators in Levski are physicalized. The ones in Lorville (were) supposed to be replaced - but what worries me is that the implementation method on the rest stops and in lorville would make them hard to replace there, implying to me that CIG is getting into the mindset that theyre okay to add in and are here to stay. Realistically, they aren't okay from the perspective of the message that CIG puts out there. "Loading-zone" tele-vators could be considered borderline-instancing from a physicalization perspective (not because youre loading into a different server instance, but because doing so allows you to isolate a nested physics grid with a single point of entry allowing you to independently develop the physics properties for that region) and therefore is, to a certain degree, counterproductive in the development of other aspects of the game. *To expound upon this, here's my logic: by isolating physics grids through the use of teleporters, CIG dev team can easily, kind of.. avoid dealing with the annoying process of having players pass between physics grids dynamically in those parts of the game. That means they don't have to worry about passing vectors, etc and deal with the common glitches that come with that. We see the problems that come with crossing grids manifest themselves in other portions of the game (such as leaving a ship while in motion, or the fact that a buggy wil constantly fall through a ship when parked inside of it, etc). Additionally, making these things work correctly is important to developing physicalized ship damage, true ship pressurization, and whatnot (because physicalized ship damage requires that missiles and whatnot can pass through ship physics grids seamlessly and make impact with specific points of a ship. It also affects pressurization because atmospheric qualities and properties on a ship need to be affected by the environmental situation and therefore need to be tied to the objects in the game and not the grid itself). So the problem of seeing these elevators pop up in more and more places is more than just an issue with the elevators itself - it's a bit of a sign that these things like physicalized ship damage and pressurization are starting to get backburner'd just to get the content out and that concerns me. At the end of the day, a lot of the problems and common glitches that have been plaguing us since 2.x/3.0 (like ships spawning without parts) are also related to this problem (because part spawning and modularization are affected by ship damage physicalization) from a code/dev perspective. Until this technology is fleshed out to completion, ships spawning without parts, ship pressurization issues, physicalized ship damage, etc will continue to hang out in limbo. So, I'm humbly making a plea that we stop adding these nonphysical teleporter-vators and focus on the reasons why these things keep getting added in the first place - because as of right now, it looks an awful lot like theyre just a convenient way to not have to deal with the remainder of the issues that have come from the nested physics grid tech. And to be completely honest, I'd rather not have a ton of content go in when something that important isn't done because the process of redoing it later will get exponentially more difficult, and we'll get closer to approaching the "eh fuck it" mentality and leaving it as it is. That's not how we do things around here, never has been. So take out the damn nonphysical elevators. </rant>
