Greetings Chris and Rob. I am writing these lines, as I see you taking design choices that the community does not want and that ultimately lead down a rabbit-hole, where we end up with a Freelancer travel system, rather than with the really open world travel system Star Citizen should have. I think I understand why you take these design choices, and I think I have solutions for you, that will enable you to leave the rabbit-hole we are currently heading down. . Now in order for everyone to understand what I, or maybe we, are talking about, this letter is divided into four paragraphs: A. TLDR / Abstract B. The History of Quantum Travel and the reasons for the Status Quo. C. Why CIG should change their current design approach to Quantum Travel. D. How CIG can change the design of Quantum Travel and still reach it's goals. (Alas Spectrum does not allow for enough lines, to post even paragraph D in one post, so I will have to put these paragraphs into more than thread) Part 1 (A, B) _ _: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/4/thread/open-letter-to-chris-roberts-and-rob-reiniger-part Part 2 (B, C, D) : https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/4/thread/open-letter-to-chris-roberts-and-rob-reiniger-pa-1 Part 3 (D) _ _ _ : https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/4/thread/open-letter-to-chris-roberts-and-rob-reiniger-pa-2 Part 4 (D) _ _ _ : https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/4/thread/open-letter-to-chris-roberts-and-rob-reiniger-pa-3 ) . . A. TLDR / Abstract Stop imposing more and more artificial restrictions on Quantum Travel (like blocking blind jumps and direct jumps). This is a design trap, that will lead you down an increasingly irreversible path, where at the end SC won't be an open universe any more, but only a universe of a few scattered points of interest in a 2D plane. Instead, LIFT the current restrictions on QT again and find ways to solve the problems, that you try to solve with those restrictions, in a more natural way, which does not interfere with our freedom in Star Citizen. This post, or maybe paper, tries to help you with this process. . . B. History of Quantum Travel and the reasons for the Status Quo. B.1. The History of Quantum Travel. Let me either refresh your memory or let me tell you what you have missed: Before 3.0, quantum travel actually felt like it should be. Complete freedom. You could turn your ship into any direction, hit the switch and go where you wanted. It was the epitomy of an open world in 3D. With the advent of 3.0, we got shackled to quantum beacons and orbital markers. No more could we get close to a location that is not marked up for QT, by just estimating a jump and then flying the rest in sub quantum. No more could we reach the other side of a planet, with the natural ease of just pointing our ship past the planet twice and be there. No, now we have to lengthily find Orbital markers or a ground location, if we want to get around it. Resulting from that arose the biggest and most consistent shitstorm I have ever witnessed in Star Citizen, forcing the devs, represented by Rob Reiniger in the attached video, to concede and promise that blind/free quantum jumping WILL be coming (see video 1). But all the development that we have seen so far, puts this promise into question, and even seems to be limiting travel to the 2D planetary plane (like the next point). Now finally, our history into this rabbit-hole culminates, in the development of GATES through "The Aaron Halo", which supposedly are the only way to reach the other side of this torus-shaped asteroid belt (see video 2). But of course, only then can they be the only way to the other side, if you cannot fly above and below this Asteroid belt, but IF Star Citizen really wants to be an open world 3D space game, above and below ALWAYS have to be an option. . B.2. False information regarding the Status Quo. There are people who think that the current limitations on quantum travel are technically necessary. They are not. The blind/free QT in 2.6, proves the possibility of the technique. The fact, that in 3.8, Crusader OM1 is currently above the sun, and that routes over Crusader OM1 Jump far away from Crusader and still work properly, means that the current travel mechanic is also not enforced by object container streaming or any problems. In other words, the current clunky QT design, is in place for other reasons than technical ones and those reasons are as follows. . . This letter is continued with B.3. in Part 2, which can be found here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/4/thread/open-letter-to-chris-roberts-and-rob-reiniger-pa-1 . . . @All: Please use Part 1 to reply to this letter, as Part 1 contains the TLDR and the links to the other threads.
