I’ve had this discussion so many times that I decided to write a post about it, so I can simply link to it in future discussions. Many people like to portray PvP in Star Citizen as the “hard mode” way to play the game. Additionally they are demanding higher rewards. In reality, the current system makes PvP one of the easiest playstyles in the game. First, PvP players almost always choose when and where the fight happens. They decide the timing, the location, and the target. That alone creates a massive advantage. Most encounters are not two players looking for a fight — they are ambushes against miners, haulers, salvagers, or mission runners who are busy doing something else. Second, most ships being attacked are not designed for combat in the first place. Mining ships, cargo ships, and salvage ships are built for industrial gameplay, not fighting. Destroying them does not demonstrate skill. It mostly demonstrates that one side came prepared for combat while the other did not. Third, there are almost no real consequences for aggressive behavior. The current crime and reputation systems barely matter. Players can attack others repeatedly without meaningful long-term penalties. If they die, they simply respawn, claim their ship, and continue. There is no lasting reputation loss that would significantly restrict their access to the game world. Fourth, the risk vs. reward balance is extremely asymmetric. The victim risks cargo, mission progress, and time investment. The attacker risks almost nothing. Even if they fail, the only real cost is a short respawn cycle. Finally, many PvP encounters are not actually about competition. They are about targeting easy victims rather than seeking equal fights. True PvP would mean engaging opponents who are prepared and willing to fight back. Much of what currently happens in the game is closer to opportunistic ambushing. Because of these factors, PvP in its current form is not the “hard mode” some people claim it to be. In many situations it is simply the lowest-risk and easiest way to create gameplay for yourself. A more meaningful system would require real consequences, a stronger reputation impact, and incentives to fight actual opponents instead of defenseless targets. Until systems like that exist, calling the current PvP environment “hard mode” is difficult to take seriously.
