R.A.D.A.R. = Radio Detection and Ranging. Using radio signals, either emitted from or bouncing off an object, you obtain both the bearing and range of that object. Now, it doesn't have to be 'Radio' band persé as it could be any frequency in the EM spectrum really. But the point I want to make is very simple : How could Star Citizen Radar be working in a solo ship with passive mode and still give you both the bearing and range ? Bearing: The direction the signal is coming from. This can be done with directional antennae (or receptive phased arrays) Range: The distance between the object and your receiver. This can be done through Active Echo or Passive Triangulation. (see below) Range by Echo : This requires you to generate an emission that bounces off the object in either a direct path (straight line) between you and the object. But this requires ACTIVE PING <-- so not what we have in game. or, Range by Triangulation : This requires you to detect a signal coming from an object, who's source location and time of emission is known, at two different receptors with a time difference. But what would be the source if not your own ship's ping ? If you presume the signal to be from the local Star or a Comm-Satellite, then you fail to have knowledge of when the signal way emitted. So this only works if you have another ship (wingman) and you can compare the spectral signature with him (data-link). But, this is not how radar works in the game since you get range while flying solo and not actively pinging. And if you use your wingman's ping then we're right back to actively pinging. So this also is not how radar works in the game. What Star Citizen is calling RADAR is not what RADAR is in real life. Star Citizen's form of radar somehow obtains range without an active ping or 2ndary station link with a known calibrated emission source. Maybe there's some futuristic Hocus-Pocus invention going on but the name given to it should not be 'RADAR', because the only way radar can give you range without having a 2nd station to link with or actively Pinging away when flying solo simply does not befit the definition. That futuristic invention would receive a new name. So FFS give it one. I have worked with actual radar for almost 30 years now and the way SC keeps talking about using a radar in this game just completely messes with the basic fundamentals of everything I know to be radar.
