With gimbal assist/auto-aim, it's now pretty obvious that the size penalty for gimballed weapons needs to go. In its place, there should be a damage reduction modifier. That modifier should be increased when using gimbal assist (although there is the issue of gimbal assist removing the skill floor and allowing zergs to rule the day). Case in point: the two mass drivers are S2 and currently stronger than most S3s. That means gimbals are simply better than fixed right now, since most combat ships have S3 mounts. It's simply too difficult for CIG to balance every S2 against every S3... let alone every single Sx against every single Sx+1.
