With 3.23 we got a visual overhaul of almost all marker systems. As players, we appreciate it when issues that old systems have are being addressed and overhauled. But as such players, we are also the ones that see and use such systems very extensively and in the case of markers there is basically no minute going by in which one is players are not confronted with markers. Markers make up a huge portion of playability and in gerneral navigating in the verse. And in the current form, albeit visibility is improved, there are some real problems, that should be addressed. What is a good marker design? (A players point of view) 1. marker shape, color and concistency The marker shape should be indicative of what it represents. -- A real life example would be the little cog wheel icon ⚙. everyone knows: Thats settings. In SC that is unfortunately not the case. But it is particular important, as there is a lot of stuff and for everyone, representative markers let us know what is going on. An example for an indicative marker would be the 3.22 QT markers for planets and moons. The new markers look cool, but miss the point of telling what they stand for. The same way we should be able to distinguish between people markers, objects/gear, objectives/missions. Colors should be kept consistent across the board. For the color, everyone agrees on basics: Red = Danger, Green = Friend, White = Neutral. Additionally, we have yellow = objectives, blue = unknown. Why do I have red QT markers in my mustang but in other ships is yellow or blue? Highlight minimal crucial markers. Dogfight target markers as an example, need to be spottable in a split second. This may require, flashy colors, shadow, outlines or size scaling. It must be visible against the sunlight, dark space or noisy backgrounds. It can not be that from 20 enemy shevrons on my hud I do not know which one my target is. even worse, when my target to the side or behind me Make visual style consistent across markers that belong together. Within a system, lets say FPS, the markers should be of consistent style. why do i get a red blinking ship marker when I melee knockout an enemy on foot? this marker style does not belong there. At the same time, and that goes into the lore, I expect any markers, buttons etc that e.g. are displayed by my helmet or lens to be consistent in style. 2. remove clutter, show important information Normal flight example: show me where to go, give me small indicator about ships and vehicles that pop up. But do not show names of neutral ships (random strings), Names and distance of players, enemies that are not in my party or targeted. Combat: I need to be able to spot my targeted enemy AT ALL TIMES. do not obstuct it with missile markers, escort markers range indicators etc. When it goes off the screen I need to be able to spot where to turn easily. In FPS, if a party member is incapped, I need to know fast. make use of reticle hover and eye tracking. Eye tracking is perfect for that. e.g. only show names and distances to ships and QT markers when I lock onto it or look at it do not show distance and marker for docking collars, elevators etc unless needed e.g. during boarding outside the ship pop in animations are important to get attention but are not required for every QT marker when I look around 3. Accessibility and QOL Some folks suffer from sorts of color blindness that makes it especially hard to distinguish markers from some surroundings. Let players decide what information should be shown. I certainly do not need an UNKNOWN marker on every ping return during FLT but maybe a Miner needs it. This is a discussion. So i encourage people to post things that they like and things that they dislike about markers in the verse so CIG has a good basis to improve from here on. Thanks for reading!
