We have learned the following from CIG : The SCM value is the speed the ship moves in Standard Combat Maneuvering mode, i.e. the default, in-space movement speed of your ship." "Q: Why are the SCM/AFB set at certain values and restricted? A: In reality there is theoretically no set limit for speed in space, but we restrict this for two reasons in Star Citizen: gameplay and technical. The SCM values are built around where we want each ship to perform from a design perspective and ensure that the ship can still do maneuvers as expected and within G-Force limits. The higher these SCM speeds are the harder it is for compelling combat to occur, with the majority of players doing little more than “shooting at blips” instead of having exciting, skill-based dogfighting where you can see your opponents." https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/engineering/16172-The-Shipyard-Ship-Technical-Information Right now there are several Problems , and IMO with speeds and combat getting higher and higher , it does feel like we are "Shooting at blips" the farther we get away from the original intent of SCM for compelling combat. The original designers of this game knew that combat above SCM (except for AFB/BOOST) is not ideal , and makes for a less than ideal / fun combat experience, and it showed. For some reason that has been lost, and I for one would love to see it's return in some form or fashion. Several ways have been proposed in the past to get us back to SCM combat and FUN. Here is another very simple proposal : Make Capacitors have Speed Penalties. Every Tick/percentage above SCM ( getting farther into the red line), have capacitors drain while you are pushing more power to your engines (less "magazine capacity" and "shield recharge rate" , and recharge / refill with a delay as you get back towards SCM.. Change Engine capacitors to affect maneuvering thrusters positively at SCM and below, and negatively as you go farther above SCM and gain top speed / velocity, at top speed almost negating your maneuvering thrusters completely, acting as a pseudo-cruise mode. Change BOOST / AFB to a completely different / separate system that does not affect or use capacitors.
