I've been playing in the PTU and I've noticed a common trend that all of the ships that I fly are having more and more of the screen covered in more MDFs and bars to the point where it doesn't matter what ship I fly, 50% of my screen or more is blocking my view to the outside of the ship. In the image above I have a Vanduul Scythe targeted and I'm trying to shoot at it. It's only 716m away and very close for my ballistic shotguns. The problem is that I cannot see it and aiming at it is very difficult because of where the targeting reticle lies. It's in the center of the screen but my MDFs come up almost to that same point, so I am unable to see the target even when I have it targeted. I have to get within melee range in order to see the target if he's trying to fly above my view. This is extremely bad for my ability to fight in combat. Here's another ship, the Merlin. This will eventually be my Connie's savior when it comes to a fight. Unfortunately, I can't fight that well since I can't see where I'm aiming. All of the ship weapons are angled to shoot at the center of the screen, but that's just a place that I cannot see. As I see it, the problem is not the MDFs, though many people would think that. The MDFs are important for telling the player the information they need in order to make important decisions. We need these MDFs and we need them to be visible in some way. The problem is where my guns are aiming. Now that the MDFs have been moved up, the place where the guns are aiming needs to be moved up as well. There is this game called Wing Commander, maybe you have heard of it. It had a TON of MDFs all over the screen and a tiny area to view things. This is very similar to what we are having now. The difference was where the guns were aiming. Instead of aiming at the center of the screen, they aimed at the middle of the area that the pilot could see. This made it so that even if the target tried to fly over the pilot, he would still be able to see the target because the MDFs would not get in the way. If we move the crosshairs up to the center of the viewing area, we would be able to see where we are shooting without giving up the MDF space. CIG doesn't seem like they want to get rid of the MDFs. The least they can do is use the remaining space on our screen better. The guns on the ship are already at different heights and widths from the pilot and are all adjusted to shoot towards the center of the screen. Moving the area where they are all targeting would not be that difficult, especially something as slight as this. Our speed and ship stats HUD was already moved up to make room for the MDFs, so why not move what we use to navigate our guns and ship up as well?
