I don't understand why it hasn't been mentioned before, and full disclosure its not my idea. I was watching a Twitch VOD of Hunternet gameplay. Why not let the acceleration be gradually slower and slower the faster you go? - E.g. you can accelerate to e.g 300 m/s in the same time you can now (in a few seconds). - Above 300 m/s your acceleration starts to drop off. Maybe it should take twice as long to accelerate from 300 to 500 m/s as it does today. Accelerating from 500 to 800 m/s should make take 4x as long. Accelerating from 800 to max speed should maybe take 8x as long. These are obvious just hypothetical values, to illustrate what I mean (maybe its too slow, maybe its still to fast). And it should not be intervals but the acceleration should be exponentially slower the faster you go. In normal speed ranges, flight would be mostly unaffected. Going above whatever limit is desirable you would start to feel the effect. E.g it would take maybe a full minute or two to reach e.g. our current limit of 1200 m/s for a light fighter. Max speed would no longer feel like a limit, your acceleration would be the limit. You could even remove the artificial hard limit (that is totally unrealistic in space anyway), and replace it with a much higher limit (e.g. 3000 m/s or whatever the game engine can handle) but you would basically never be able to achieve such speed because it would take such a long time to reach (e.g. 1 hour) - thus better simulating the feeling of space with no speed limits.
