So I've been testing VOIP for all this time. I have few major issues with it apart from bugs. 1. VOIP MUST be enabled on Global chat(proximity) by default. Pros - As soon as this is implemented game game will go 10x more immersive. You would be actually able to talk people into "things". It will rise community communication to a next level. Cons - You might get annoyed with kids spamming undesirable audio content into your comms. Future W/A for that is muting the exact person who is annoying you / vote function for players in proximity to mute targets ability on Global comms input(He can still listen thou). (can be abused so need to be careful with that voting implementation). EDIT: I see there is a lot of misunderstanding present in the discussion below. I would like to make few things clear: - Global VOIP on foot in the closest proximity with your helmet off is one thing. - Global VOIP on foot with you helmet on using its comms is another thing. - Global VOIP in ship using your ships comms is a third thing. - Managing Globals listed above in heavy populated areas, its restrictions and other stuff is whole another story. The thing I am actually speaking of is mostly comms in space (out of populated space ports/armistice zones), especially ship comms. 2. On foot/EVA comms should have more than 100m range. I would say at least 1km for now. At least in out or armistice zones. 100m is a very small range for anything more that a "Hi, such a lovely weather outside of Olisars Airlocks today, why don't you go and breathe some fresh air mate!" It is a very cool idea when ships have a far more signal strength and even being on foot you can hear them from afar but they can not hear you unless they are in a close range of your small on foot transmitter. Still 100m is a very small number. It will not allow any ground ops to take place using ingame comms. Even if you imagine players surrounding a facility planet side with size of Shubin Mining for example, they would need already at least 1km range to be able to communicate somewhat properly. My suggestion you make it at least 1km. Perfectly 5km for now. It will be ten times less than a ship has. This argument is somewhat invalid if you read the next point with no limitation to party comms, STILL this may increase usability for non partied players in search and rescue scenarios or any other game situations people are now finding frustrating. When someones EVA i.e. from ship he looses comms with a pilot. He hear the pilot but pilot is unable to hear him as close as 100m. 3. Party and custom groups VOIPs should not be limited to 50km. I understand there will be more depth to comms gameplay in future but for now, while we do not have any mechanics in game I would make it system-wide, or at least planet wide (crusader i.e. will have coverage of all its moons and other bodies on its orbit). Right now limiting the range of party chat makes it unusable for non 3rd party app users at all. You have to go to mG for party chat each time u are out of 50km range. Basically at current state of the game it limits any strategical communication and forces people to discord/TS. We are having a lot of fun using ingame comms with our ORG but we have to switch to discord each time we are in QT or even a bit further away from each other. Right now this brings nothing but frustration and less testing power by players. Tests in PU: I have been doing tests on public and it seems 1 of around 50 people have it active. Other either do not know it is present, or don't bother turning it on. I was standing on one of the routes for at least 3 hours a day from the moment VOIP in global became a thing. When people QTed to me I gave them a choice of halting their ship and be scanned (in case of singleseater) or boarded for inspection (if ship construction permits it), or to be shot down. As a result for all these days I was able to stop less then ten people. Some of them fully cooperated no matter if they had mic or not. Some of them tried to resist on boarding. But I was sure they do hear me. All of that was super cool and gave a feeling of immersion over9000. Around five guys tried to escape letting me know they hear me saying something like "Bye-bye Sucker" right before they QT. This was really funny and cool. Others were just shot down while spooling or QTed away without even hearing me talk to them. Definitely you have to have an option to disable Global VOIP explicitly, fully opting out of it, but that will be your own choice. You will understand the consequences of not hearing anyone around you. Also what I said in the beginning there should be options to mute personally or maybe vote mute others, who annoy you. No matter what, you have to grow community with VOIP and immersion from start so it would be a must for everyone closer to release, not just some feature no one never uses. This is what most of us are looking forward to, no matter are we PvP or PvE oriented players. Griefers or normies. Pirates, Mercenaries, or lawful enforcers. EDIT: Almost forgot it. Give us the option to connect to multiple voice streams (i.e. both party and global) at once and one we transmit to. Or at its best give us an ability to keybind transmits to different channels. That would be really dope in future.
