Proposal When a user identifies that a report that has been submitted and is status Open, Confirmed, or Under Investigation, they have the option to make a contribution that links the given report as a duplicate of another report. When the menu opens to allow the user to either use the input box to type keywords or a STARC- number, the returned list of matching reports should only contain issues which are status Open, Confirmed, Under Investigation, or Fixed. Users should never be marking a report as a duplicate of an archived report. Given: Report titled "Lorum Ipsum" was archived as feedback New report was created called "Lorum Ipsum (set dolor!!!1!)" Users should contribute to the new report as Incomplete with More Info: Feedback should go to the appropriate Spectrum thread under the Feedback category. There is nothing to gain in this case by staff or players marking it as a duplicate of the original report. I doubt that staff are wasting time making extensive notes to track invalid issues (feedback, feature requests) so in this case there is a major net gain by removing the archived records from the duplicate suggestion menu. Why This Matters One of the most highly duplicated reports on the Issue Council are reports regarding Error code 30009. When I pull up a duplicate report, here is what I see in the results: Dear reader, you and I both know that there are at least a dozen active status (Open, Confirmed, Under Investigation) reports that are going to fit the criteria without entering any additional text, but almost everything I'm seeing here are archived. None of those are going to be a relevant main report. In fact, none of them are. The actual main report is issue-council.robertsspaceindustries.com/projects/STAR-CITIZEN/issues/STARC-38941 (hopefully) and that does not even show up in all of the suggested items, and it's an exact text match for "30009". For any report that ends up having a lot of duplication going on, you have to use the text input in order to refine the results - but the resulting problem is that you cannot filter those results, order them, or deal with the truncated format in the window. So when I sit down and do any meaningful work drilling down to find the main reports for issues, what I have to do is open up a new tab, go to the IC dashboard, and use that tab to do the actual searching. When I find the right report, I have to copy and paste the full STARC- number into the "Search a duplicate" input and then click 'Select'. I spend usually 2-5 hrs a day on the Issue Council, in my experience, the "Search a duplicate" UI is almost never the right tool for the job. If we can remove the archived items, that will go a long way for us and especially the more casual users of the Issue Council so they can get more relevant results up front. Filtering and sorting would be great, but honestly just removing the duplicates as a first step would be a huge improvement.
