Especially for situations when voting matters, like when the top voted posts are the ones that get answered. As it works currently, favor is heavily given to those who post soonest in a thread. If you have some kind of bot set up to notify you when a Q&A thread goes up, you can cheat the system and always get your question answered. This leaves a large number of potentially popular questions unanswered, since they get buried to the bottom by being late to the party. Also, because there is no downvote button, once a post floats to the top, it will very likely remain there, even if there is a large number of people who don't really care about it. The solution I would propose is twofold. The first is pretty straight forward - give us a downvote button, along with a percentage upvoted display on each post. I know there is potential for abuse of the downvote, but I think the benefit outweighs the costs. As it is right now, the true voice of the community is not being heard, only those who make their comments soonest. This phenomena may be true with a downvote, but at least you could see what percentage of the community disagrees with a comment, or doesn't think it should be up top. The second solution would eliminate the "early bird gets the worm" phenomena entirely I think, which is to hide upvotes for AMA/Q&A threads until the voting period is over, and have the default view be to sort by new. This would force people to actually browse through a thread, and see what comments they agree with most, rather than simply being fed the most upvoted comment, which as I said above, is usually just whatever comment happened to be made the earliest. I feel these two changes would fundamentally change how the community gives feedback, and improve the environment of Spectrum for daily use.
