Despite the advantages of nested threads, I have seen a lot of complaints about them. From reading through those complaints and from thinking about the logic of using a forum; i have come up with a way to have the forums set up while that solves the problems mentioned while keeping the advantages of the nested threads. Lets start out with a thread like this. http://imgur.com/vuaaRLe As you can see the OP started out with a topic and it begun by talking about two aspects of the main topic. When someone brings up a new aspect it would look like this. http://imgur.com/zc93i6S This is how it works now in our current forums. What changes is when someone makes a new post in a subtopic. That looks like this. http://imgur.com/pwzVmjG Notice how the most recently talked in nest gets moved to the bottom chronologically. Also notice how it tells you what parts you have read and what parts you have not read. This is how I see all forum topics could work. Another problem mentioned is how it continuously cascades to the side leaving less room. This can be fixed by adding a new category of reply referred to as a nested reply. This will be a new button you can click on someone`s post. It will go right next to the reply button. Nested replies cause an indent like they do now in nested threads. Replies will be changed to what they look like now in chronological threads. Post related to that sub topic just reply to any person in that sub topic and another tab will not happen. This will leave the poster of the specific point the decision if it should be a sub topic. In short, this format maintain the advantages of both chronological and nested. You can easily go to the last page to see what was just posted since nested topics get moved if they have a post made in them. There are markings that show what is new and what is not. However, you can also talk about two different topics without one drowning out the other. It prevents circular discussion because the most recently talked about topic does not hide the work of previously discussed points. edit: Someone pointed out that replies in nested format don't have the link back like chronological has. This needs to be fixed. By link back I mean you can click their name and it jumps to what you are replying to.
