I applaud CIG's use of the Spectrum forums to gather questions ahead of episodes of Star Citizen Live and the like. This gives the community an opportunity to actively participate and I think these result in some of the best content for backers. That said, I do think there is a lot of room for improvement in the method that the questions are gathered for such episodes, etc. Just to be clear: I am not criticizing any individual's thoughts, opinions, or ideas. I am evaluating the system for collecting questions for related content. The quality of a question is a matter of skill, experience, and effort/time, not a matter of the quality of an idea. The Issue: To be blunt about it, the current system usually ends up in a lot of low-quality questions being up-voted towards the top of the list. Those questions then eat up a significant amount of content time without adding any significant value. The latest episode "All About Alpha 3.9" is a good example. In that episode, a large number of questions were "closed-ended" and relatively trivial. Many of these questions could have, and may have been, summarized in a question like "Can you explain how food an beverage consumption will interact with the player status system in 3.9?" which may have resulted in more valuable details being shared and thus a higher quality result overall. The Cause: I believe, as many others have suggested, that the underlying cause to the issue is that the earliest posts will inevitably receive the most views and therefore have a drastically higher probability of being up-voted. This issue above is likely exasperated by the fact that more carefully thought out questions would take longer to post than the simple closed-ended questions I mentioned earlier. For example, "GiB BMM?" could be more likely to be the first question posted than anything that adds any real value to the Q&A segment. The Solution: I'm not going to pretend I know what would be the best solution for this in either the short or long terms, but I do have some ideas that may help give citizens a reason to more carefully consider questions and up-votes: 1. Delay up-voting for 24 hours after the initial post. 2. Randomize the the posted questions before voting begins. 3. Limit the number of up-votes/posts each citizen can perform on such a thread - since questions posted automatically get 1, they should count against the total available. To be clear, I am suggesting a pool where posts and up-votes are treated as the same for each user. As a side-note, applying this to all threads might have it's advantages as well.
