When we click to view a notification, sometimes there is only one post shown. The OP is listed, but under it it says: You are viewing a single reply's thread. View the rest of the replies > Sometimes people do choose to quote parent posts, but not always. When they do not, we don't always know what they are talking about. Clickign the "View the rest ofg the replies >" button dumps you into the thread, which is only partially loaded so it's not even like you can use control-f to find the replu you're looking for. The best way I found for finding parent posts is to switch to classic view and sort by most recent first. That means the recent reply will probably be near the top, and allows you to click back through the replies using the reply from link, but unless we click back through every post before it in the thread we're still potentially a bit in the dark. Chains can be several posts long, and one post in the chain can completely change the meaning of what is being said. A different ship could be mentioned, for instance. There needs to be an easy way to see not just the post that the viewed post replies to, but every post in the thread going back to the OP. This a feature of Reddit - the "context" link on a reply shows posts going back to the OP. I think that Spectrum needs this feature too, not having it is confusing and wastes our time.
