Right out of the gate, back in the Kickstarter, CIG pledged to us that Star Citizen would support mods. So I am a bit concerned that at this stage in the game, a modding API has not been released to allow players to create mods for: ship HUDs player HUDs ship MFDs It seems to me that without a modding API for these things, CIG is headed for a "some percentage of players are going to be unhappy" scenario. Look at a game like World of Warcraft. There are a ton of UI elements that you can download mods for. The entire player / target / party, health mana energy runes rage, buffs debuffs timers, notifications, alerts, even fully custom widgets that don't exist in the base game... you can customize ALL of it. You can make your health bar taller or shorter, wider or narrower, move it around the screen, change the color, the transparency, the textures... all from a game that came out in 2004. So why don't we have something like that in Star Citizen? Common ship HUD elements like the speed, throttle, the compass, weapons, landing gear status, ship lights, decoupled mode, quantum travel indicator, blah blah blah blah... right now, we only get one flavor of it. And we are stuck waiting for CIG to update it and crossing our fingers that they might actually improve it instead of damage it. For example, why is the Quantum Travel indicator almost never centered on any ships? Why does the speed indicator disappear when spooling up Quantum Travel? Why does the speed indicator totally suck now compared to the old one? Why is everything only one or two colors? CIG is stuck assigning the design of these things to one or more people, and they have to make decisions in a vacuum. They try things, and in many ways they improve things, but in other ways (like what I listed above) they actually HURT things. And it just boggles my mind that THIS is the approach being taken. Like, why? This game is supposed to support mods, so isn't things like the ship HUD the most BASIC area where mods should exist? It comes with a TON of benefits, too, including: CIG's license agreement could state that it has the right to take any mod that players create, and incorporate it directly into the game. Players will do a whole lot of work and iterations on designs without CIG needing to do anything. CIG can take several mods that they like, and just incorporate them into a variety of ships (eg, this Elegant UI is going to be used on Origin ships, and this Industrial UI is going to be on Misc ships) It democratizes the UI design process, allowing players to not only do a bunch of work for CIG, but also the download counts will tell you which UI's work and which ones don't, and why. The framework of a modding API for ship HUDs (which uses building blocks) should also allow them to build modding APIs for other areas of the game that also use building blocks (such as the player HUD and ship MFDs and even elevator panels). It will be faster. CIG is notoriously bogged down, and everybody knows it. Players are always chomping at the bit, so why not give them something to do? Guaranteed, if CIG releases a modding API, new HUDs will be out within a day, and GOOD HUDs will be out within the week. It allows CIG to give a nod to the players, and show that they are honoring their commitment to allowing mods, and improves CIG/community relations. This is just off the top of my head, and I'm sure a lot of you can come up with a lot more reasons. But just... I am concerned, honestly, that the relatively new design of Building Blocks did include even a basic v1 modding API. I worry that Building Blocks may not be compatible with mods ever, and this would be honestly a HUGE disappointment for me.
