I do know CIG said they wouldn't make the VTOL for the Freelancer since the engines are too long once they're rotated 90°. Also, since the landing gears are attached to the thrusters the Freelancer wouldn't have any usable landing gear once in VTOL mode. What if there was a way withoud remodeling the Freelancer too much? Here is my idea and it works for all Freelancer models. 1st lets tackle the landing gear: The upper model is the current Freelancer. The lower model is what it could look like. By simply moving the landing gear to the sides of the hull one would be able to deploy them independently of the state of the thrusters. I barely moved them downwards as to avoid further modifications to the ramp/door. 2nd and most importantly the rotatable thrusters: As you can see the animation consists of two parts: 1. The little wing has to move forward a bit otherwise it would touch the ground. One could make it so that it moves to the front exactly as in the animation or simply place it more to the front of the model altogether without having to animate it. 2. I know it is not perfectly animated but you get the idea. The thrusters move to the front while rotating and thus avoid touching the ground. Notice as well that they do not come into contact with the turrets either. If the ship would rotate the main thrusters as shown in the animation, the thrust downwards would be near the center of gravity and it would be able to hover, land and take off. The blue semi-transparent circles represent the axis by which the main thrusters are attached to the hull. Lastly a few alternatives and why I discarded them: 1. Why not simply move the thrusters more to the front and be done with it? Because then the side turrets would be in the way. 2. Why not move the axis by which the thrusters are attached to the hull a bit backwards? Because then one would have the problem that the main thrusters would be to far to the back and the ship wouldn't be able to hover because the nose wouldn't be able to keep up with the main thrusters and keep falling downwards. 3. Why not leave the main thrusters as they are? Because I'm sure most citizens who own a Freelancer (like myself) and even those who don't are sad to see the hint of rotatable main thrusters (since they are attached to the hull by an axis and not directly), see them in the MISC Freelancer commercial but then get into the verse, spawn a Freelancer and have to come across the sad reality that they are fixed and won't rotate one bit. And besides, it would be a fancy animation in my opinion. xD Please leave your feedback and ideas to my suggestion on how to modify the Freelancer series to the way they were intended to look like!
