Hey everyone, I asked if we could make a sticky thread for the modding section here and the reply was yes. So I was thinking of making a thread with a broad-stroke overview of the different kind of things we all get up to here and include links to the more specific threads for tools, tutorials and discussions. So this thread would be used for us all to decide on how it should be laid out and used as a template then the final thing can just be copied over to a new one with a decent title with input from everyone who wants to get involved. There are plenty of guides on here already and this wouldn't seek to replace that but give a general overview of the different areas and provide links to more specific discussions. Almost like an information hub for everything here. It could then be expanded over time if needed. To get started I have a draft below! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello there and welcome to the Modding Spectrum! If you're brand new to modding, or even just modding in SC, the process can have a steep learning curve, not to worry though! We have prepared a summary of everything we get up to here! Getting Started Typically the work we do here can be broken down into various parts, they are as follows. Modelling Ships, Vehicles, Structures Characters, Creatures, Aliens Rigging Ships, Vehicles, Structures Characters, Creatures, Aliens Animation Ships, Vehicles, Structures Characters, Creatures, Aliens Cinematics/Rendering Cryengine machinima Cinematics using other graphics engines (UE4, Maya, 3ds max etc) Essential Reading Modelling, Rigging and Animation are each broken down into the same subsections which cover hard and soft surfaces. This is because the two have slightly different processes and tools used to create them. The main discussion threads have been linked for each thread below. They are the best places to look to help get into the world of SC modding! I have also included some essential guides which are required for most areas. Essential Tools - [HOWTO] Create your Own Art using Game Assets by Heffay, this tool is invaluable and allows the extraction of assets from the game files. Additional versions of the converter can also be found here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/50172/thread/howto-create-your-own-art-using-game-assets - How to Guide for Modding Star Citizen 2.5 assets by DirectorGunner, an in depth guide for extracting and converting SC assets from the game: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/50172/thread/how-to-start-modding-existing-star-citizen-assets - Star Citizen Texture Converter by Eppi, this is a very useful tool to allow you to use SC textures outside of the game: https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/369524/sc-texture-converter/p1 Modelling - Modding Guide for Ships, Rovers, Probes, etc by Angeldust et al. This guide gives an overview of the various software packages for modelling and texturing as well as additional tutorials for getting started with Blender. This thread will be built and expanded upon over time: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/50172/thread/modding-guide-for-ships-rovers-probes-etc Rigging/Animation - CryEngine 3 Character Animation Kit. This is a pack which contains a basic animation rig for Maya along with an fbx file containing a male human skeleton which has been extracted from the game. It alows anyone to animate and rig their own assets which would be compatable with the assets currently in the game files: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/50172/thread/tool-release-cryengine-3-character-animation-kit Cinematics/Rendering Since an update in 2015 it has since been made impossible to simply port assets into Cryengine directly. However there are methods for obtaining old builds either from cloud archives or from the launcher itself. This is discussed in detail in DirectorGunners post which I have made a direct link to here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/50172/thread/how-to-start-modding-existing-star-citizen-assets/250035 A cryengine tutorial series coming soonTM, though there are countless tutorials on youtube. Cryengine 3.8.6 is the latest and easiest to use imo. Extra Reading - A starter package (Software and high quality video tutorials) by Blizz. A very helpful thread which expands upon the thread from Angeldust: https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/13211/to-new-developers-a-starter-package-software-and-high-quality-video-tutorials/p1 - Cryengine 3 Manual, not for the faint of heart but exceptionally useful once you find your footing: http://docs.cryengine.com/display/SDKDOC2/Home That's probably about it! If you have any questions feel free to ask them wherever you like! Though if it is a question regarding specific software or an area the best place will often be in a thread relevant to that topic :slightly_smiling_face: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ That's about all I can think of at the moment to include. Like I said its intended to be a broad strokes overview of everything modding related and puts all the amazing threads people have created in one place :slightly_smiling_face: Let me know what you think and what can be changed :stuck_out_tongue:
