I would like to suggest a mod to the ROC-DS, which may make it more viable. Background story; Mining with prospector with S1 mining lasers and mole with S2 Mining lasers. Nowadays, as far as i remember, the ore deposits require a specific amount of energy to be cracked. If a mining laser on its own can not crack a deposit, then you can add another mining laser, and maybe crack it. This could be, 2 prospectors, 1 mole and a prospector, any combination of mining lasers,, until it becomes too much and the deposit blows up. So far i know, this is not the same with gem mining. We have handheld multitool gem deposit mining. We have ROC gem deposit mining. There is no large handheld miner yet, so far i know. There are 2 gem deposit sizes. One for multitool (small) and one for ROC mining (large). I personally like the extra layer of depth ore mining has, that you can combine multiple mining lasers attached to the same or various ships, to crack the bigger ore deposits (yes there are also other devices but i will leave them aside now, they aren't forgotten however.) This seems to be missing from the gem mining system. In regards to the ROC, we have a vehicle that i would divide as follows; 1.You can easily move it around with smaller vessels, like the nomad or the cutty. 2. It has a set upkeep cost, this is important to remember for later. 3. It can mine large gem deposits. 4. It has 1 scu of cargo. The ROC-DS does the same, however requires 2 people, the only benefit it brings over its sister vessel is a larger cargo hold. Now, as an example, in the following picture we see the ROC; https://ibb.co/8MZLwkc Then we have the ROC-DS https://ibb.co/1RPmHty Now the suggestion; First i would like to address a change to gem mining, an upgrade imho, to bring it in line with ore deposit mining. With this i would like to introduce a single large handheld tool for mining purposes, in the category size 2, just like the maxlift for example. I would also like to add weights to these items for painting a picture purpose, arbitrary thus. Multitool mining laser has strength 1. Large handheld mining laser has strength 3. Roc mining laser has strength 6. I would like to add gem deposits with weight. Small deposits have fortitude 1. Medium deposits have fortitude 3. Large deposits have fortitude 6. XL deposits have fortitude 9. XXL deposits have fortitude 12. This is just for example sake, arbitrary numbers to paint a picture. If you want to mine a small deposit, you can use 1 multitool laser beam, or anything above, to crack the deposit. You will always succeed with a multitool laser, however hammering on that deposit with a large handheld laser, with strength 3, requires a bit of care, but can be done easily. If however you burn it with your ROC laser, the chances it will explode are very high, unless you are carefully working your laser with utmost precision. Medium deposits can be cracked by anything 3, and above. This means either 3 multitool lasers, 1 handheld laser, etc. Large deposits can be cracked by anything 6 and above. 6 multitool lasers, 2 handheld lasers, 1 roc laser. XL requires 9. Thus, 9 multitool, 3 handheld, 1 handheld and 1 roc laser, or 2 roc lasers. And, as you guessed, XXL requires an accumulation of 12 strength, easiest to go about it is with 2 ROC lasers. Now i will introduce the ROC-DS i would mod it into. https://ibb.co/1Q3gkNd A ROC-DS with 2 lasers instead of one. In regards to the ROC-DS, modded, we have a vehicle that i would divide as follows; 1. You can easily move it around with smaller vessels, as it takes up a bit more space compared to the roc, however not by much. 2. It also has a set upkeep cost, if the roc would cost 1000, then 2 rocs would cost 2000, but 1 roc ds, would cost ?1200?, as it only has an extra laser arm, to upkeep. 3. It can mine (in my model) larger deposits a single roc laser could not mine. 4. It has 4 SCU of cargo space. I believe this would make the ROC-DS a viable vehicle, however requires tuning to the gem mining gameplay loop, which imho would be great, as it brings it in line with ore mining. This will result in still providing people choices, they can decide to go solo, or as a team, as a solo you could crack up to XL deposits if you bring your own S2 handheld mining tool when driving your ROC, but it will be a dangerous endeavor. It supports multiplayer gameplay, it will also provide an option for when CIG introduces NPC crew at a later stage, where the NPC could sit in the co-pilot seat of the ROC-DS, not denying single player experience for the solo players among us. Hope someone at CIG sees this and bring it into consideration and, simply speaking, rescues the ROC-DS from its meme status.
